Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas has revealed that one co-star confronted him over “cocky” behaviour on set when he was younger. The star famously played Jason Grimshaw on the soap for 16 years before departing a decade ago, reprising the role briefly last summer.

The actor reflected on his earlier years while chatting on the At Home with The Thomas Bro’s podcast, notably in the wake of brother Adam’s time on I’m a Celebrity: South Africa.

“I think showbiz is a bit of a crazy world at times… If I’m going to sit here and talk about the showbiz world, I’ll even talk about myself, like growing up like, you know my ego and the things I used to do growing up,” he told his sibling.

“But I was young kid growing up in the public eye and I was, I could say at times, I was actually a proper dickhead. And I wear my heart on my sleeve.”

Ryan went on to reveal that Corrie co-star Charles Dale, who played Dennis Stringer on the soap, once pulled him to one side in the green room and gave him some advice.

“He said, ‘You’re acting a little bit cocky and people are seeing it and it’s not looking good’. I was like, ‘Yeah, I needed that’.

The star suggested that the “problem” in showbiz now is that “everyone’s playing the game” and that “the game’s changing”.

“No-one wants to see the filtered version of anyone anymore, right?” he elaborated. “Everyone’s seen the light, everyone can see through it, right.”

It comes after Ryan spoke on the podcast about his apparent “reputation” for “being quite rude” to fans asking for photos, recalling one incident when “there was like two or three people asking for photos”, responding: “I’m not terrible, actually… I’m the same as you, I’m good with people.”

When Adam said it was an “old lady”, Ryan shared: “She was there, and she was taking pictures. And we both leant in and we did a picture, while she was taking the pictures without even asking.”

His brothers suggested that the woman was struggling with her phone and was nervous, before Scott proposed that Ryan was an “old-school celebrity” and “used to get absolutely pestered all the time”.

Ryan, 41, acknowledged he was a “proper d*******” when he shot to fame aged 16 in 2000 as Jason Grimshaw on the ITV soap, and the actor changed his ways after Charles, who played Dennis Stringer, confronted him about it.

Speaking to his brothers, I’m A Celebrity…South Africa’s Adam Thomas and Love Island 2016 alum Scott Thomas, both 37, on the latest episode of their At Home With The Thomas Bro’s podcast, Ryan admitted: “Showbiz is a bit of a crazy world, bro.

“And do you know what? If I’m going to sit here and say about the showbiz world, I’ll even talk about myself, my ego and the things I used to do growing up.

“But I was a young kid growing up in the public eye, and I could say at times, ‘Yeah, I was natually a proper d*******.’ And I wear my heart on my sleeve.”

Ryan recalled: “I remember Charles Dale pulling me to one side, he played Dennis in Corrie. And he just pulled me to one side in the green room and said, ‘You’re acting a little bit cocky, and people are seeing it, and it’s not looking good.’

“And I was like, yeah, I needed that. But the problem is now, growing up in showbiz, is everyone’s playing the game, right?

“But the great thing about the game now is, have you noticed the game’s changing? No one wants to see the filtered version of anyone anymore. Everyone’s seen the light, everyone can see through it.”

Ryan credits him and his siblings for being their “true selves” for the success of the At Home With The Thomas Bro’s podcast.

He added: “And it’s true that no one wants to see the bulls*** anymore. And there’s certain people in showbiz that play this game like there’s no tomorrow.

“And we’re not playing that game anymore. This is us, this is who we are. We champion everyone else around us. And if we’re not getting it back in return, then there’s a door, man.

“We haven’t got time, we’re not wasting any more time. We’re not here long enough.”

Ryan played Jason in Coronation Street until 2016, and he reprised the role at the request of co-star Sue Cleaver, 62, as part of his on-screen mom Eileen Grimshaw’s exit storyline in 2025.

Last year, Ryan told InsideSoap magazine that he credits the soap for his success.

He said: “It’s the reason I am where I am today.

“I’m very, very blessed and lucky to be given the opportunity again to go back.”

Charles, 63, played Dennis in Coronation Street from 2000 until 2002.
