EastEnders spoilers follow for Wednesday’s (April 29) episode, which is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

If you shed countless tears while streaming today’s EastEnders then I’m sure you weren’t alone, with the episode in question proving one of the BBC One’s soap’s most emotional offerings to date.

Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), who was in the advanced stages of dementia following a diagnosis near two years ago, died peacefully with the two people he loved the most in the entire world right beside him.

The Walford stalwart returned to the Square in 2024 after three decades away, reuniting with old mate Phil, who was in the middle of a mental heath crisis.

Nigel’s presence proved a huge comfort for Phil, who was ultimately saved by his best mate. Nigel confided his dementia diagnosis in Phil and urged him to get help.

Phil was grateful and returned the favour by vowing to be by his side until the very end – and he ultimately fulfilled that promise. When Nigel’s condition progressed to the point that wife Julie (Karen Henthorn) felt a care home was the best option, Phil felt unable to visit his best mate, believing Nigel to be already ‘gone’.

Grant (Ross Kemp) was brought back to the Square this week in a bid to help Phil see that he needs to visit Nigel, who was conscious at one stage and asked Grant to retrieve ‘one last stone’.

Phil, who was still refusing to go to the home, knew that Nige was referring to an old skimming stone he’d had for years and thus set off to the beach in order to find one similar to it.

Julie, meanwhile, resolved to stop Nigel’s care, with her beloved husband nearing the end as she urged Grant to return so she didn’t have to say goodbye alone.

But Grant found himself conflicted, knowing that Phil should be there and thus he attempted to talk to his brother, who fought tears as he revealed that looking after Nigel provided him with a purpose following his mental health crisis and he can’t say goodbye.

Grant reminded Phil of just how much he’s loved and, after locating a stone similar to the one Nigel treasured, Phil decided to make his way to the care home.

At the care home, Nigel received a number of visitors, including Sam (Kim Medcalf), Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) and Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown), who all said emotional farewells.

Spurred on by Yolande to say her goodbyes, Julie admitted that she didn’t want to part but, talking to her beloved other half, she subsequently urged him to go as his breathing stopped numerous times.

But Nigel didn’t go. He was still hanging on. Hanging on for Phil.

Phil arrived in subsequent scenes, much to the shock of Julie who was delighted to see him. Phil gave Nigel the stone and, against all odds, he gripped on to it.

In a scene from Nigel’s head, he sat at the beach with Phil, who back in the real world struggled to say goodbye to the ‘best friend he’s ever had’.

Julie thought Nigel needed to know that Phil was going to be okay without him and thus he told him such a thing, promising that he’ll be fine as he reflects on how much brighter Nigel had made his life.

In Nigel’s dream, he and Phil shared a heartfelt goodbye as Phil told him he loved him. Nigel returned the stone to Phil and took one from the beach, skimmed it off the sea, reminded of how proud his father was when he did such a thing as a child.

Nigel then passed away. Helmed by devastatingly authentic performances from stars Steve McFadden and Karen Henthorn, Phil offered support to a devastated Julie, gripping on to the stone he’d previously given to Nigel, determined to do what his friend asked and live life to the full.

The episode in question has already received acclaim online, with X user Chels writing that they were ‘bawling their eyes out’. ‘such a beautiful, powerful episode with incredible acting,’ they added, while HausOfJen said: ‘Gotta get ready for work & i’m sat here like a blubbering mess from #eastenders what an amazing episode.’

Fan Daryl, meanwhile, branded the episode ‘the most beautiful’.
