SHOCKING NEWS!!! EastEnders – 8 reasons why Nigel’s death week was soap at its best

This week’s EastEnders saw the tragic death of Nigel Bates, bringing to a close the powerful dementia storyline that began back in December 2024 when the classic character returned to Walford. As the soap transitioned into a new era over the last year, Nigel’s story was consistently told with care, kindness and heart – raising awareness of the disease, and bringing out a new side of Albert Square icon Phil Mitchell.

It seemed fitting that this storyline concluded with a sensational week of episodes, so here is why we think EastEnders got Nigel’s final moments so right:

1. The performances

It goes without saying that this week’s episodes were held together by exceptional performances from Steve McFadden and Karen Henthorn. Phil and Julie said heartbreaking goodbyes to their beloved Nigel – Phil as his best friend and Julie as his wife. You can’t help but be moved by Julie’s visceral grief for her other half, while Phil bringing himself to visit Nigel one last time was a fitting conclusion to their long-standing friendship.

On paper, Paul Bradley’s role in the episodes was minimal, as Nigel was barely conscious in the final days of his life. But the imagined scenes of Nigel on the beach were a poignant reminder of the man that dementia cruelly chipped away at over the last 16 months. Since his return, Paul has taken his character on such a journey as his illness changed and worsened, and he deserves credit for his commitment to this role.

2. The writing

Wednesday and Thursday’s episodes were written by Richard Davidson, who crafted some beautiful words both before and after Nigel’s death. The writing for Phil was particularly exquisite, as he opened up to Grant about his fears for the future, before he thanked dying Nigel for his friendship and told his friend that he loved him.

Julie’s speech in The Vic in the aftermath of Nigel’s passing was also touching, as she explained that she finally realised why her husband chose to return to his roots in Walford after his dementia diagnosis. “He loved this place,” she said. “All of you. This was his home. It was in his bones. Didn’t matter how long he’d been away for.”

3. The quiet

Nigel’s death could have been melodramatic and overdone, with a host of fancy storytelling techniques – which the soap genre is leaning into more these days. But instead, his final episode was incredibly stripped back, with each scene given the space and time it deserved, making Nigel’s final moments as peaceful as possible despite his struggles to breathe.

Plus, as good as the writing was, it was often the quiet beats that were most effective. Nigel’s hand closing around the stone Phil had picked out specifically for him was an achingly bittersweet moment that said more than words ever could.

The opening sequence of Thursday’s episode was also beautiful, with a series of silent scenes involving Julie and Phil at the care home, Grant and Mark at No.55, and Kat and Mo in The Vic. In the minutes and hours after Nigel’s death, it was almost as if Walford was taking a collective breath before saying goodbye to him.

4. The community spirit

Since Nigel moved into a care home, Albert Square had rallied round Julie to make sure there were always people visiting him to give her a break. As Nigel approached the end of his life, the likes of Yolande, Linda and Lexi turned up to say their goodbyes – highlighting the connections he had made since returning to Walford.

The community spirit continued at the end of this week, as The Vic hosted a screening of Nigel’s film as a tribute after his death. Just like at Christmas, the residents came together to remember Nigel, and the pub was filled with laughter as the credits rolled.

5. The Slaters

Speaking of The Vic, having Kat and Alfie back in charge of the pub and at the heart of the soap feels very right, but the Slater chaos of the past few months has meant that their latest stint behind the bar has been hampered by often exhausting family drama.

But this week the pair stepped up to bring everyone together after Nigel’s death, and it felt like an important move towards the pub becoming a pillar of the community once again.

With Anthony’s death firmly in the rearview mirror and Jasmine officially welcomed into the family, there were some lovely Slater scenes this week. Four generations of the iconic family were sat round a table at one point, as Mo spoke candidly about wanting to be remembered, and it was beautiful to see.

The Slaters have always been known for being a fun and formidable group of women, and this week there were glimpses that suggested they are back and better than ever.

6. The history

Throughout Nigel’s storyline, there have been heartfelt recollections of scenes that viewers saw played out on screen over three decades ago. There was more nostalgia in Nigel’s final week, with returning Grant reminding his childhood friend of the time when he superglued a coin to the pavement as a trick.

So much of the week of episodes was informed by the past: details about Nigel’s fractious relationship with his dad, Grant and Sharon’s rekindled passion, Phil’s suicide attempt last year, and even moving mentions of Lola’s death by Billy and Lexi. In a soap, nothing ever happens in isolation, and these episodes deeply respected what had come before.

7. The humour

While EastEnders was emotionally taxing this week, there were still moments of classic comedy that felt very needed. Jasmine took charge of Big Mo’s surprise 90th birthday party, though Oscar was tricked into thinking that Shrimpy was the stripper rather than the piano player at the bash.

Meanwhile, Max and Cindy tried and failed to hide their new relationship, with some hilarious close shaves before disgusted Lauren uncovered the affair. It was the light-hearted relief we desperately craved in between those devastating scenes.

8. The aftermath

The day after Nigel’s death, Phil’s loved ones were worried about him, concerned that his mental health would decline again. As viewers, we also expected Phil to spiral in his grief – but EastEnders subverted our expectations. Phil carried his armchair outside and set it on fire, a rather elaborate way of rejecting the notion that he would return to a life of isolation.

He invited his family and friends around for food and played one of Nigel’s favourite songs as a tribute, and soon everyone was dancing joyfully. To the soundtrack of ‘In the City’ by The Jam, Phil said a quiet thank you to his dearly departed friend. This time Phil is going to do things differently, because of what he learned about life from Nigel, and the closing moments of the heartbreaking week were full of hope.
