Yellowstone’s Marshals Spinoff Season 2 May Be Breaking One of Taylor Sheridan’s Biggest Patterns Yet
Marshals stars Luke Grimes as Kayde Dutton, the character he played on Yellowstone. After the announcement that Marshals would return for Season 2, Grimes addressed the new season’s production in a new interview with Collider. He revealed that filming is slated to start in May 2026, and when asked if Season 2 will also consist of 13 total episodes, like Season 1, Grimes shared that there will actually be a much higher total.
As Grimes stated, “No, it’s going to be more than that. It’s up in the air right now. It’s either going to be 18 or 20. Yeah. They like it.”

A Taylor Sheridan TV Trend Is Broken
Typically, the TV shows shepherded by Taylor Sheridan do not have seasons that are quite so long. Though Yellowstone concluded with a fifth and final season that spanned 14 episodes, all previous seasons had 10 or less. That also applies to the other Yellowstone offshoots, 1883 and 1923, as well as Sheridan’s other shows, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Landman, and the newly-released series The Madison.
Most likely, the viewership success of Marshals played a key role in getting the show an increased episode count for Season 2. With its premiere episode, the series became the most-watched network original series premiere without a football lead-in since 2017’s Young Sheldon debut. It also drew 9.52 million viewers according to Nielsen’s live+same day ratings, which was the highest new series premiere of the 2025-26 broadcast season. Over one week, the premiere’s total viewership across multiple platforms grew to 20.6 million.

Marshals picks up after the events of Yellowstone, primarily following former U.S. Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton as part of a group of U.S. Marshals assigned to protect Montana. Other returning stars from Yellowstone include Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton), Mo Brings Blenty (Mo), and Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater). Marshals also stars Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means.
Production is meanwhile moving forward on Dutton Ranch, another spinoff set after Yellowstone. That show will bring back Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser to reprise their respective roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, while Annette Bening, Ed Harris, and Jai Courtney will also star. While it’s not yet clear when Dutton Ranch will premiere, it was reportedly given a nine-episode order for its first season.
