Coronation Street’s Sue Devaney on death mystery!

Coronation Street star Sue Devaney has good news for Debbie Webster fans – there’s still a long way to go in the popular character’s big storyline.

The ITV soap has been exploring how Debbie’s life has changed since she was diagnosed with dementia, but producers aren’t ready to lose her from the show anytime soon.

Debbie was recently given a chance to enjoy every moment with her friends on the cobbles when she was released from prison following an appeal.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy during a recent Corrie press event, Sue promised: “I think there is a long way to go for Debbie. There’s a lot more fun to be had. You do see her deteriorating and that’s really upsetting, but you still see the Debbie that I love to play – the fun Debbie!

“It’s Debbie in all her glory. You see her with her friends and that’s lovely. She’s doing all the things that she’s always wanted to do in life.”

Discussing the story’s real-life connotations, she continued: “None of us know how long we’ve got. We all know we’re going, but we just don’t know when!

“If someone said to me, ‘You’ve got two years, Sue, what are you going to do in these last two years of your life?’, I’d just want to be around my friends and my family. I’d definitely want to travel a little bit too. And I’d want to make amends with everyone I thought I’d hurt in the past. And forgive others – that’s a massive thing.

“Often the things you thought really matter, don’t really matter! Things like: ‘Is that person speaking to me? Have I done something to that person?’ That’s all irrelevant, isn’t it?”

Sue predicted that Debbie’s main focus will be absolute honesty with her loved ones – so they should probably all brace themselves for some home truths…

She said: “Debbie is just happy to be with the people she loves. She’ll enjoy having them around and enjoy life at its fullest, but be honest with them too. Debbie’s come from that background where she’s entrepreneurial. She’s got the big hotel, and in the past wanted to drive the best car and have a wonderful house.

“It’s all ‘stuff’ – but actually none of that impresses! I’ve realised that over the years myself – none of that impresses me. It never has done.

“What really matters is honesty – if you can be honest with yourself and those around you. That’s what Debbie is trying to do, so she’ll say everything she wants to say, before she can’t say it.”

Coronation Street fans have been seen casting the same verdict after an exit was confirmed, which comes as they were also given an update on Debbie Webster’s future.

Fans of the ITV soap have been desperate for the beloved hotel owner to be released from prison, after she took the blame for the horror crash, featured during the Corrie and Emmerdale crossover, which claimed the life of her neighbour, Billy Mayhew.‌

But as fans, and Debbie herself, know, she wasn’t to blame for the incident. She became involved in the drama after a drunk Carl Webster left Debbie and Ronnie Bailey’s wedding, which was taking place in Yorkshire, with Debbie in the passenger seat of his car as she tried to stop him leaving following confrontations with Kevin and Abi Webster.

Viewers saw tensions rising between Carl and Debbie in the car and just as the latter was about to tell him something, Carl ended up losing control, ploughing into the existing wreckages that had already piled up between Becky, Lisa and Betsy Swain, Emmerdale’s Aaron Dingle and John Sugden, and the minibus, carrying a number of Debbie and Ronnie’s wedding guests, driven by Billy.

It was after the crash that Debbie, who was diagnosed with early-onset dementia last year, revealed herself to be Carl’s mum, and that was why she was covering for him. The bombshell didn’t go down well with Carl, and the rest of Debbie’s family have since discovered the truth as they do their best to secure Debbie’s freedom while watching her health deteriorate.

Meanwhile, Lou Michaelis has become Debbie’s friend while inside. Corrie viewers will recall that Lou first arrived in Weatherfield back in February 2025, quickly followed by her husband, Mick, and the pair were described as the street’s new ‘nightmare neighbours’. The couple, played by Farrel Hegarty and Joe Layton, moved into Mawdsley Street at the back of Chesney and Gemma Winter-Brown’s house.

They didn’t waste any time in ruffling feathers amongst their new neighbours. But things took a devastating Mick brutally killing PC Craig Tinker while in the line of duty, in upsetting scenes aired back in May. Then, not long after, Lou also found herself behind bars after carrying out an attack on Gary Windass.

While behind bars, Lou has been seen looking out for Debbie and it’s already been revealed that this week, she will spring into action to save her friend from ruining her upcoming appeal, which new spoilers for next week’s Corrie have already confirmed will be a success.

But it does mean to end of Lou’s time on-screen will once again be coming to an end, much to Corrie fans’ disappointment. @liiarla said: “Debbie and lou are so sweet 🙁 it’s making me so sad that lou will be gone soon.” @Audz32129841 commented: “When Debbie gets out of prison it’s a pity Lou couldn’t get out on tag , it could have shown a great friendship and how Lou could rebuild her life and relationship with her kids. #Corrie.”

I really hope Farrel comes back more permanently once Lou’s served her time #Corrie.” @RyanSoapKing25 added: “I wish Lou wasn’t leaving again. They should’ve made her a full time character. #Corrie.”

It comes after Farrel recently revealed she’s left the show. “I’m out of the show now. I’ve stopped filming,” she said in an episode of the Girlfriend Material podcast. “I came back in Corrie for, like, a short stint. I was [initially] in it for six months and I came back because I’m in prison. She’s in prison. She’s not a good girl.”
