George’s partner Nicola secretly visited the abusive dad in hospital and Eddie told her he was desperate to heal his rift with his son.

When George spotted a hospital parking ticket in her car, he pressed her where she’d been and was furious to find out she’d met with Eddie.

However, he later made a trip to the hospital himself where he came face to face with his old man and confronted him over his upbringing.

Laying it on thick, Eddie told him: “I ain’t long for this world.

“It’s the only thing I want. The only thing I need. I’m sorry, George, for everything I did and put you through. Your whole life. I’m not the man I was. I can see now, all the mistakes I made, the way I carried on, angry and cold.

“I treated your mother like a dog, and you, even worse. I know it’s just words but I’m so so sorry.”

Suspicious, George wanted to know what Eddie really wanted from him.

Eddie said he’d been having counselling in prison to help him understand his behaviours and owned up to being a racist.

He said: “I was a racist. Pure and simple. It was the way I was brought up and I was too stupid to question.”

George wanted more from his dad and told him: “You admit it, you hated me. I saw it in your eyes every day. You hated me because of the colour of my skin so own it, say it out loud or we’re done.”

Eddie obliged and said: “Yes, all right. I hated you ‘cos you were black… now I hate myself for it.

“I can’t change the pain I caused but I can own it, and I can say from the heart, with everything I’ve got. I’ve never cared about anyone more than I’ve cared about you.”

Later in the episode, a nurse comes in to check his blood pressure and oxygen levels and reminds him he’ll die in prison if he doesn’t arrange somewhere else to spend his final days.

He shrugs her hand away and the zoom on his face suggests he’ll push to stay at George’s — is that the real reason for his repentance?

Meanwhile, Nicola warns George that daughter Gina could be pushed further away if he decides to have a relationship with his dad.

Earlier in the episode, Gina told uncle Kojo she was unwilling to give Eddie another chance and recalled how her granddad had caused the family such pain.
