The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Coronation Street dated April 15. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.

Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) detailed the extent of his abusive relationship with Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) in powerful and heartbreaking Coronation Street scenes today.

Todd escaped Theo’s clutches on Monday, but it came after an attack so brutal, Todd could barely hold himself up afterwards. He managed to stagger from his flat to the Redbank Apartments. Outside, he called Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and explained he wasn’t able to physically walk up the stairs.

Sarah ran outside and was horrified to see the state Todd was in. Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) rushed to get the car, and drove Todd to the police station.

As the instalment opened, Todd had photographs of his injuries taken by Kit. DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) then arrived and led Todd into an interview room.

Gareth Pierce delivered a truly phenomenal performance in the scenes that saw Todd discuss the times Theo has abused him, and did an incredible job at highlighting the intense emotions Todd experienced throughout the conversation. There was exhaustion, self-hatred, even guilt as he told Lisa and Kit that he believes he’s partly to blame for Theo’s violence.

While this was happening, Theo was busy trying to escape Weatherfield. He was caught by Gary Windass (Mikey North), who drove him to the police station after threatening him with a wrench.

As Theo arrived, Todd was leaving with Sarah. He witnessed Theo being dragged into an interview room by Kit, and was chilled when his parnter claimed that they’d get things sorted out.

To no-one’s surprise, Theo worked hard to defend himself during the interrogation. He was placed in a cell, and later was seen banging on the door claiming that he’s an innocent man.

A very worried Sarah took Todd to the hospital to get him checked over. He collapsed outside and was eventually told he had suffered a lacerated spleen as a result of Theo’s attack.

While he was getting checked over, Todd’s loved ones had arrived.

When Todd was wheeled out of the ward room, George Shuttleworth’s (Tony Maudlsey) heart broke into millions of pieces as he, for the first time, viewed the sheer horror Todd was put through.

Lying in his hospital bed, everyone hovering, checking on him, refusing to leave his side definitely felt intense for Todd — and yet, at the same time, it didn’t feel like too much at all.

It was potentially a really pivotal moment that’s allowed Todd to realise he isn’t alone,
