Emmerdale has aired a new development in Jacob Sugden’s mobbing storyline, with Kerry Wyatt overhearing a bullying conversation between him and his mentor, Dr Todd.

Tonight’s episode kicked off with Jacob realising he’d hit Cain Dingle with his car. The medical student was sent home from work after Dr Todd made it clear he didn’t have what it takes to be a doctor.

His boss’ words had an impact on Jacob, who drove in a stressed state and didn’t see Cain until it was too late.

Cain was rushed to the hospital. There, he and his family were informed he was on the mend but was unable to have his cancer removal surgery because of the accident.

A worried Sarah took her anger out on Jacob, accusing him of being careless. He hesitantly tried to open up about his situation at work, but resolved not to go into details with Sarah.

As Emmerdale has teased a bigger storyline in store for the young doctor student and his boss, Kerry came unexpectedly to the rescue after she listened in as Dr Todd berated Jacob.

Offering to have a chat with Jacob, Dr Todd intended to humiliate him once again. “You’re such a sensitive soul,” she told him condescendingly when he reminded her how upset he’d been after their previous conversation.

“After what happened with me and your dad, I should never have been driving, not after the things you’d said to me. I was in a proper state,” Jacob continued.

“How you reacted afterwards has nothing to do with me,” Dr Todd insisted. “You’ve got years of this ahead of you. You’re gonna get het-up about everything?”

She didn’t stop there, further leaning into Jacob’s guilt to suggest that Cain may be doomed following the accident.

“Just admit that you made a mistake behind the wheel. And I know you’re only a student, but surely even you know that we’re here to save people, not end them, so get sharper, Jacob,” she said, as Kerry was listening from outside the door.

“Focus! Because you weeping and wailing and panicking could already have coast someone their life. Do you actually understand?” she added.

As it got too much to bear for Kerry, who was concerned for Jacob’s mental health, she stormed into the room, pretending to be looking for Kyle.

When Jacob introduced Dr Todd as his mentor, Kerry didn’t lose the opportunity to remind the doctor what a responsibility that was.

“Mentor, eh? Wow, that is quite a responsibility, nurturing all this amazing new talent,” she said with a smile as Dr Todd simply replied: “Indeed.”

The polite exchange anticipates a harsher clash for Kerry and Dr Todd after she overhears the doctor confronting Jacob in upcoming scenes.
