Despite being one of the main cast members of the highly successful Yellowstone series, actor Luke Grimes was unsure when he first learned about the upcoming spin-off series, Marshals. In a recent interview with EW, he revealed that he was doubtful any fan of the original wanted to see his character, Kayce Dutton, in a spin-off, saying:
His story ended so perfectly. I don’t know if we should go back into it. I was very reluctant at first. I’d never heard of anything like this before. I was like, ‘If you take a poll of who people want to have a spin-off, I don’t know if Kayce would be top of that list.
But his desire to make the upcoming spin-off stand on its two legs was a challenge that Grimes wanted to take on, despite original creator Taylor Sheridan’s absence from the franchise. And it seems the team working on Marshals has achieved the originality the star was looking for.
Luke Grimes Reveals How Marshals Is Different From Yellowstone

As Grimes stated earlier, he was wary of delving into the backstory of Kayce Dutton, a former U.S. Navy SEAL turned rancher in the original Yellowstone series. And given how well it fit the narrative as a whole, he was a little hesitant to throw Kayce back into a new story.
Especially when the upcoming spin-off centers on Dutton joining a specialized group of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting Montana, it had to meet Grimes’ standards. And in a recent interview with ET, he claimed the show will be extremely fast-paced and intense, something new and unique for the franchise. He said:
It’s a very different show, it’s a lot quicker pace, there’s a lot of action in the show.
Thus, despite not having the original creator, Taylor Sheridan, around at the time, the spirit of Kayce, keeping the past in focus, still mirrors Sheridan’s Wind River, filled with everything an action-packed series requires.
Marshals Can Be the Breath of Fresh Air the Franchise Needs

Apart from the obvious shift in theme from a Western to Crime and Law Enforcement, what Yellowstone needed most was a derivative expansion of the main narrative featuring the Dutton family.
And Marshals seems to be the series that can achieve it, as taking away from the Dutton family saga, where Kayce is now his own man, can expand the universe into new characters, exploring new regions and cases. Most important of all, it will let Kayce become his own man, rather than be tied to the Dutton Ranch and his family name.
And finally, Marshals can become more than just drama, as the main character’s past comforts and haunts him. And with his identity crisis being tested in a high-tension, high-stakes environment, philosophical and psychological explorations may also take center stage.
