Process of Elimination
Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) discreetly left the room so that Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) could cross-examine Holly (Ashley Puzmeis) about the up-and-down way she’s been acting lately. Holly confirmed that she wasn’t pregnant, which was a relief for all concerned. Sarah and Holly then brainstormed what might be bothering her.
They considered it might be her birth-control pills, but Holly pointed out that she’d been taking them for months, and didn’t have problems before.
Secret Ingredients
Sarah then pointed out that medicines can sometimes change their ingredients, and Holly could be reacting to that. Sarah asked to see the vitamin supplements that Holly has been taking and made a good point: dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, so they can put pretty much anything into their overpriced capsules.
Sarah again said she’d been taking them for a while, and Sarah again reminded that ingredients can be changed at the last minute. And then they both shrugged and decided, oh, well, there’s nothing we can do about that.
Test Case
Did Sarah forget she’s a doctor? And doctors can do fun things like order blood tests? And blood tests can do fun things like figure out what substance is building up in the patient’s system?
Instead of Holly and Sarah standing around and guessing what might be poisoning her, why not, you know, actually find out? Even if Sarah has principles about treating family members, the hospital is full of people who could draw Holly’s blood. Now, we realize University Hospital is terrible at any kind of lab work, but they could at least give it a try.
