Coronation Street Soap Scoop! Will’s major turning point

Hope Dobbs has struck again in Coronation Street. This Thursday (7 May), the Weatherfield troublemaker found herself at the centre of fresh drama after clashing with Daniel Osbourne, who accused her of using AI for a poetry assignment. The classroom dispute quickly escalated into something far more serious when Hope mocked Daniel over his troubled personal life, referring to his ill-fated relationship with Megan Walsh.

Daniel, portrayed by Rob Mallard, is already shaken by the collapse of the relationship after Megan was exposed for grooming Corrie teen Will Driscoll. Emotionally fragile, Daniel lost his temper during his exchange with Hope – and she was quick to exploit his reaction.

Tonight, Hope accused Daniel of assault, leaving him panicked for the future of his career and reputation. Overwhelmed, Daniel confided in his father Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) at No.1, seeking guidance. It’s there that the show briefly revisited one of Ken’s most turbulent storylines – his infamous conflict with former pupil Aidan Critchley.

Ken may be positioned as a steadying presence on the cobbles, but his Weatherfield history is far from calm. One of his most notorious ordeals came in the early 2000s, when he was teaching at Weatherfield Comprehensive and he first came into contact with wayward lad Aidan.

Played by Dean Ashton, Aidan appeared in the soap between April 2002 and March 2003. He was a classmate of Sarah Platt as well as one of her first loves, much to the concern of her mother Gail Platt, who disapproved of their relationship from the get-go.

However, the teenage romance rapidly evolved into something much more dangerous as Aidan’s behaviour quickly caused issues both in and outside the classroom.

The most serious incident occurred when Aidan persuaded Sarah to go for a joyride in Ken’s car, which ended in the pair overturning the vehicle. Sarah was left seriously injured in the accident and spent several days in a coma, while Aidan fled the scene instead of seeking help, leaving her for dead.

The aftermath only intensified Aidan’s feud with Ken, as he’d made it his mission to push his own teacher out of his job. Shortly after the crash, Aidan continued to cause disruption at school and targeted Ken to undermine his authority. His behaviour escalated to the point where Ken lost his temper and physically struck Aidan, breaking his nose.

This had significant consequences. Aidan filed a formal complaint against Ken for assault, resulting in Ken being suspended from his teaching role. He was later arrested for assault and ultimately pleaded guilty before receiving a conditional discharge.

Despite this, Aidan and Ken’s story did not end there. In another twist, Aidan found himself wrongfully accused of Maxine Peacock’s murder after serial killer Richard Hillman framed him. At the time, Aidan was underage, meaning he required an appropriate adult during police questioning. Unexpectedly, he turned to Ken for support – and Ken agreed to help him, choosing to put their past conflict aside.

Alongside Sarah, Ken was one of the few residents who believed in Aidan’s innocence. Their instincts proved correct when Richard eventually confessed to his crimes, leading to the lad’s release from behind bars. However, the ordeal marked the end of the line for Aidan’s time in Weatherfield.

Shortly after he was cleared, and soon after Sarah let him down gently to date Todd Grimshaw, Aidan left the Street, vowing to continue his education and attend sixth form. He has not been seen or heard from in the show ever since. Today, actor Dean Ashton has stepped away from the spotlight, though he remains active on social media.

Back in the present day, Daniel now finds himself facing a situation that could have serious consequences on his own career. And one source hinted that the fallout from his confrontation with Hope may not be easily contained. “This is a potentially career-ending combination for Daniel because instead of dealing with Hope being cheeky and provocative, he loses it,” said our Weatherfield insider.

But could Ken’s experience be a helpful parallel?

Aidan Critchley in Coronation Street was a teenage tearaway who tormented poor Ken Barlow, dated Sarah Platt, and ended up being investigated for Maxine Peacock‘s brutal murder!

What was Aidan’s story and where did he end up?

Teen troubles for Aidan Critchley in Coronation Street

Aidan was one of Ken Barlow’s students at Weatherfield High – and he made poor Ken’s life a misery!

Sarah Platt, who was herself a bit of a teen tearaway after being a very young mum to little Bethany, was smitten with Aidan.

She and Aidan started a romance, despite Gail trying to keep them apart. They got into all sorts of trouble together including going joyriding in Ken’s car!

When Aidan lost control of the car, Sarah was badly injured and was in a coma for a while. Though thankfully she recovered.

Ken Barlow (William Roache) finally looses his temper and punches Aidan Critchley (Dean Ashton) on the nose.

With tensions running high between Aidan and Ken, things reached breaking point. Aidan goaded Ken to the point where he punched Aidan and broke his nose!

Ken was suspended but things didn’t work out for Aidan either. He ended up being thrown out of home and started squatting in an empty shop owned by Sally Webster – now Sally Metcalfe.

Richard realised Aidan was the perfect scapegoat for his evil deeds

When Richard Hillman plotted to murder Emily Bishop, he knew he would need someone to take the blame.

Aidan was the perfect scapegoat.

On the night of the planned murder, Richard drugged Aidan and stole his clothes.

He headed off to kill Emily but things went wrong when Maxine walked in and interrupted his evil plot.

Richard killed Maxine but Emily survived.

Despite that part of killer Richard’s plan going wrong, though, the rest went perfectly. Aidan was prime suspect in poor Maxine’s murder.

Banged up!

When Aidan needed an adult to be by his side throughout his questioning, he asked his one-time enemy Ken Barlow for help.

Ken became convinced that Aidan was innocent because he’d seen him on the night of the murder when he’d been drugged by Richard and knew he’d been in no state to kill anyone.

But Ken and Sarah were the only ones who really thought Aidan was innocent. He was charged with Maxine’s murder, and sent to a young offenders’ institute while he waited to go on trial.

Eventually, events caught up with Aidan and it was proved he’d been drugged. Not long afterwards, Richard confessed and Aidan was released.

But it wasn’t a happy ending all round. Though he wanted to get his life back on track and return to school, Sarah had got together with Todd Grimshaw by then. Aww.

Aidan left Weatherfield and hasn’t returned.
