Charity Dingle was left in shock as Dr Todd revealed her twisted plot (Picture: ITV)
Emmerdale spoilers follow for Thursday’s (April 23) episode that is now available to view on ITVX. The episode in question will air on ITV1 on at 7:30pm.
It’s not often that Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is at a loss for words but the Woolpack landlady was left utterly speechless when sinister scheming Dr Todd (Caroline Harker) proceeded to blackmail her.
Todd, as viewers know, has made Jacob Sugden’s (Joe-Warren Plant) life a living hell since starting work at Hotten General last year.
From making him second guess every decision he makes to leaving his confidence levels on the floor, the dastardly doc has stopped at nothing to exert her power and control, leaving Jacob feeling like a shell of his former self.
The young medical student has worked all the hours requested of him and often stays up late to complete assignments with unrealistic deadlines set by Todd, who is quite clearly hoping for him to fail.
When he rises to the challenge, she instead berates his efforts, claiming he needs to up his game before passing his work off as her own.
Dr Todd has tormented Jacob for months (Picture: ITV)
Fed up of the bullying, Jacob reported Todd to HR earlier this week and subsequently told his so-called mentor about the complaint, refusing to be pushed around any longer.
But Todd saw an opportunity to play the situation to her advantage after she saved the life of Charity, who had just given birth to Jacob and Sarah’s (Katie Hill) baby in a hospital lift.
Jacob was thankful for Todd’s intervention but she soon branded him ‘weak’, arguing that if he follows through with the complaint and she wereto lose her job then future patients might die.
Jacob clapped back such a notion, stating that she is the threat as her behaviour could result in future doctors not being able to proceed with their career due to her treatment of them.
It was clear Todd was on edge as Jacob refused to back down. But then she acquired the leverage she so desperately craved.
While outside the hospital, Todd overheard a private conversation in which Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) mentioned that the baby Charity delivered isn’t actually Jacob and Sarah’s but rather it’s her own biological child following a one night stand with Ross Barton (Michael Parr).

Without so much as wasting a second, villainous Todd stopped by Charity’s hospital room, where she proceeded to reveal that she knows Jacob isn’t the father.
Charity couldn’t believe the audacity of Dr Todd (Picture: ITV)
Charity was left reeling. Todd assured her that this conversation would stay between them but, in Thursday’s (April 23) edition of the ITV soap, she made her move, asking Charity to get Jacob to drop the complaint – or else!
Charity branded the situation ‘blackmail’ and it most certainly was. But Todd executed the plan in her typical manipulative fashion, with a smile and a soothing tone of voice to make herself appear less threatening before delivering the crushing demand.
Later, Jacob paid Charity a visit and, despite her reservations, she did what Todd asked, claiming the young medical student could be putting his career at risk if he follows through with this complaint.
Left with food for thought, Jacob ultimately withdrew his complaint. Todd was left grinning with glee but, despite her claims of wanting them to have a fresh start, it’s clear that Jacob’s nightmare is only just beginning.
Over the last few weeks, Emmerdale has faced even more drama as Moira’s prison sentence led to her wanting to plead guilty to crimes she never committed in the hopes that she’d get home sooner for her children.
Meanwhile, Jacob has been struggling at work as Doctor Todd keeps piling on the pressure to the soon-to-be father, which led to him hitting Cain Dingle over by driving recklessly.
Speaking of Jacob becoming a father, Charity is still hiding the truth about her pregnancy, but next week the ITV soap have teased that the end is near as she goes into labour.
Jacob stands up against Doctor Todd…
Last week Jacob realised Doctor Todd was using his past history to manipulate and had rented a property close to him. Jacob has the weight of the world on his shoulders as not only is he dealing with Todd at work, she’s moved into the village and he’s been called as a witness at Bear’s trial.
Spotting his angst, Ross checks in with him and hears about his bullying boss, but is surprised when Jacob lets slip that it is a woman. Ross advises Jacob to talk it out with her. And soon Jacob heads to see Doctor Todd and asks if he can have a word. Before long Jacob decides to raise a formal complaint with her employers.
He doesn’t worry Sarah by telling her about his meeting with HR. At the Hospital, colleague Rich can’t believe Jacob is complaining to HR and warns him it is career suicide. And when Doctor Todd spots Jacob entering a room with the HR rep, her face darkens…
Last week when fresh evidence came to light, Moira was released back home but is struggling not having her own house. Lydia offers Moira time alone in the house and she looks forward to quality time with Cain together. But when Sam and Lydia break the news to Cain, Sam can’t resist pulling Cain’s leg about him getting his end away.
Arriving back, Cain feels he’s been set-up to have sex before he’s able to and annoyed Moira would talk about his private fears to the others. Cain storms out. Later Lydia consoles Moira as she explains the idea backfired. Moira is struggling, without her role on the farm. And Robert is left feeling very guilty about her situation.
Charity’s life hangs in the balance…
Charity’s gone overboard with Sarah’s baby shower but when the woman making the cake can’t deliver it; Mack and Charity head to pick it up. After a quick toilet stop, Mack’s car won’t start and Charity and Mack are stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken down car, no phones and her waters break.
Charity spots an approaching car – it’s Ross who begrudgingly agrees to give them a lift to the hospital. Sarah makes her big entrance at the baby shower and wonders what could have kept Jacob and Charity. When Sarah finds her phone and sees all the missed calls she panics. Chas sees the same number of missed calls on her phone and knows something is seriously wrong. In the hospital the lift with Charity, Mack and Ross inside, breaks down.
Charity’s panic mounts as her pain, contractions and desperation are all mounting. Meanwhile, Sarah’s confused when she arrives at the Hospital and there is no record of Charity on the system. The confined space of the lift triggers Mack’s trauma from the bunker, whilst Ross tries to call for help over the intercom. In his HR meeting, Jacob’s anxiety levels are sky high as he relays how Todd’s bullying made him feel, unaware Charity’s childbirth drama is simultaneously unfolding in the same building
When a midwife on the labour ward gets an emergency call about a woman about to give birth in a lift, Sarah fears the worst. Over the intercom the midwife enlists Ross and Mack to help deliver the baby in the lift. Meanwhile, after Jacob’s meeting he’s horrified to see all the missed calls.
When Todd tries to corner him and ask why he’s met with HR, Jacob finally stands up to her in person. Ross successfully delivers the baby but then notices a growing pool of blood on the lift floor. Charity’s life hangs in the balance…
