Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has revealed that she was left in tears as she provided an emotional cancer update after undergoing surgery.

The 68-year-old is best known for playing Liz McDonald on the long-running ITV soap for over three decades after making her debut on the cobbles in 1989. Sadly for fans of the former Rovers Return owner, Beverly left the programme in 2020.

The former wife of Jim McDonald and mum of Steve McDonald didn’t get an exit storyline due to the pandemic. Instead, viewers learned offscreen that Liz decided to leave Weatherfield to live with her other son Andy in Spain.

Beverley revealed earlier in the month that she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer just 20 minutes before she filmed her first scenes on Irish soap Fair City, where she now plays Lily Patterson.

Earlier in the week she opened up about her fears about being ‘lopsided’ in a video she filmed in the hospital before having two lymph nodes removed.

Returning to Instagram on Saturday (February 22), Beverley informed her fans that she suffered complications in hospital and broke down in tears when she got home as thanked NHS staff for their care and support.

“I’m home. I was supposed to come home yesterday, but they decided to keep me in overnight. Minor complications.

“So I have been home for a couple of hours. I looked very pale, the nurses were calling me pale and passionate.

“I don’t know about passionate, but I am very pale. I’m feeling okay. I had a bit of a cry as you do, but I am okay,” she said.

Beverley continued: “Emotions are all over the place, you know which is you know… anyway, I won’t rant on about that. The staff at Norfolk And Norwich Hospital were truly amazing.

“And wait for this, who needs Louis Vuitton? Josh, one of the nurses, his nan makes these to keep the drain bottle in, I won’t go any further than that.”

The comments section of Beverley’s post saw her followers and fans rushing to commend her honesty and send their continued support amid her health battle.

Sharing her fears prior to her surgery, Beverley said: “Update for anyone else who is about to go through it. I’m at the hospital, it’s the big day, which I’m glad about. I’m ready, I’m strong, I feel fine. [Her husband] Jon’s had to go home, they sent him home.

“There’s a few other ladies here with me, we’ve had a chat. They’ve been in and drawn all over me and then I have to go for an injection in an hour and then the anaesthetist came in, Peter. I’m feeling OK.

“Sometimes, you get these self-indulgent feelings and vanity but I’m not alone. This other lady said she’s the same. I keep thinking, will I be lopsided? What will I wear? But I’m really good, I’m really strong and I’ll let you know how it goes.”
