Yellowstone Universe Takes Its First Creative Leap Without Taylor Sheridan in Luke Grimes’ ‘Y: Marshals’

Y: Marshals, the much-awaited spin-off from the Yellowstone universe, is gearing up for a spring 2026 debut on CBS. And it will mark the first time a Yellowstone series reportedly moves forward without Taylor Sheridan; he won’t be in the driver’s seat as lead writer or showrunner.

After the close of Yellowstone’s fifth season last year, fans hoped for fresh stories centered on the Dutton family. Instead, they got a surprise: two spin-offs in the pipeline.

One, tentatively titled Dutton Ranch, follows Rip and Beth on Paramount Network this fall; the other, Y: Marshals, shifts focus to Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes.

Despite Sheridan’s continued executive producer role, Y: Marshals will be driven creatively by new forces. We learned from Deadline that Spencer Hudnut, known for CBS’s SEAL Team, serves as showrunner and writer.

This shift in leadership brings questions about how the tone and storytelling will differ. CBS President Amy Reisenbach acknowledged Sheridan’s busy schedule but expressed confidence in the new team:

He’s a very busy guy, so we’ll take what we can get.

With Sheridan’s reduced involvement, Y: Marshals will test whether the franchise can maintain its gripping appeal while carving a fresh path.

What Taylor Sheridan’s Reduced Role Means for Y: Marshals and Yellowstone Fans

Taylor Sheridan’s decision to take a backseat on Y: Marshals probably stems from his expansive workload and the evolving scope of his television empire. As the creator of multiple hit series, including Tulsa KingMayor of KingstownLandman, and Special Ops: Lioness, Sheridan has been juggling an unprecedented number of projects.

In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he acknowledged the complexity of managing real-world properties like the Four Sixes Ranch, which inspired Yellowstone and serves as a filming location, stating:

That, for a number of reasons, needs a unique level of special care because this is a real place with real families working here. You have to respect the lineage.

This suggests that his commitments to other projects, including the upcoming Yellowstone: 6666 and The Madison, may have necessitated delegating creative control for Y: Marshals.

Additionally, Sheridan’s step back from Y: Marshals introduces fresh creative perspectives that could reinvigorate the Yellowstone universe, offering several potential benefits for fans:

Sheridan’s intense, character-driven style gave Yellowstone its signature grit, but Y: Marshals under Spencer Hudnut looks set to steer toward a procedural vibe. As ScreenRant notes, “Hudnut is best known for writing and producing shows like SEAL Team and Unforgettable. It’s safe to say that Y: Marshals won’t be solely Taylor Sheridan’s,” potentially delivering a fresh take on Kayce’s story.

Sheridan’s prolific output has led to criticism that his hands-on approach sometimes results in uneven storytelling. For instance, Yellowstone’s fifth season ruined the biggest surprise, suggesting that its stretched capacity may have impacted the quality. By delegating Y: Marshals to Hudnut, Sheridan can focus on other projects, potentially improving their quality while allowing Y: Marshals to benefit from a dedicated showrunner.

Sheridan’s heavy involvement in Yellowstone’s final season, particularly his expanded role as Travis Wheatley, drew backlash from fans who felt it overshadowed key characters.

By stepping back from Y: Marshals, Sheridan may avoid similar criticisms, allowing the focus to remain on Kayce and the new cast.

While his reduced role offers exciting possibilities, it’s not without risks. Y: Marshals may lose the distinct Yellowstone flavor without Sheridan’s writing. Regardless, Yellowstone fans can also anticipate potential crossovers, as the Yellowstone universe has a history of interconnected stories.

Luke Grimes Opens Up About Returning as Kayce Dutton in the New Spin-Off

Luke Grimes’ return as Kayce Dutton in Y: Marshals was not a foregone conclusion. The actor admitted that when Yellowstone wrapped, he believed Kayce’s story had reached its natural conclusion (via PEOPLE):

On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me.

The end of the fifth season gave Kayce a peaceful resolution, having sold the Dutton land and seemingly found his soul’s rest.

But when the idea for Y: Marshals surfaced months later, Grimes was intrigued by the promise of a fresh, gripping narrative. He wanted a story that would “rope the audience in” and provide more than a quiet, happy ending.

If it was just like, ‘he’s happy,’ we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool.

The new series will explore Kayce’s role as a U.S. Marshal, where he must navigate the demands of law enforcement while wrestling with the emotional costs of serving on the front lines of Montana’s fight against violence. Grimes also hinted that his spinoff may challenge Kayce in ways that put his family dynamics under pressure, although the specifics remain under wraps.

It will be weird. There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels.

With Y: Marshals ready to premiere in spring 2026, the Yellowstone universe embarks on a new, uncertain journey without its original creative captain fully at the helm. Will this new frontier for Kayce Dutton deliver the gripping storytelling fans crave, or will the absence of Taylor Sheridan’s direct voice leave viewers longing for the past?
