‘1923’ Season 2(2024) Will Release, Production Updates,
Premiere Date, Cast, Trailer You Need To Know!
The Yellowstone prequel is making a change for its second season.
The 1923 tale is officially set to continue over on Paramount+, with season two of Taylor Sheridan’s frontier show en route as we speak.
The Yellowstone prequel put the early generation of the Dutton family through the wringer in its first season, and they only just made it out alive.
But the finale left us with more questions about what could be next for the Montana ranch and its struggling family – 1923 spoilers follow.
Not only do they have the possession of their land to worry about, but also a murder at the hands of Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), which is sure to stoke plenty of drama in the upcoming season. So when will 1923‘s second season be available to watch? Here’s everything you need to know.
When is the 1923 season 2 release date?
A release window has not been officially announced for the second season, but given that production started this summer, season two won’t be ready until 2025 at the earliest.
While Paramount+ didn’t waste any time in confirming that the Dutton origin story would be getting a second season, the subsequent Hollywood strikes delayed the show.
It’s also been revealed that 1923 will be moving location for its second outing, marking a big change for the Yellowstone prequel.
The debut season was filmed in the city of Butte, Montana (where the show is set), but it’s been reported that season two will be moving over to ATX Studios in Austin, Texas (via Austin Business Journal).
t’s hard to tell at this stage how long viewers will have to wait for season two, but we at least know it’s on the way, so make sure to check back here for all the latest updates.
Who is in the 1923 season 2 cast?
Not everyone made it out of season one of 1923 alive. During his scuffle with Spencer and Alexandra, Arthur Jr (Alexandra’s former fiancé and the son of the Earl of Sussex) was tossed over the rails into the sea, where he met a watery death.
Brandon Sklenar has deemed Arthur’s death an accident, telling USA Today: “It was kind of a reactionary move, the guy was coming at him with a gun. It happened. [Spencer] didn’t consciously mean to kill him.”
Intentional or not, Arthur is toast. With that in mind, we expect the following to return next season:
- Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton
- Darren Mann as Jack Dutton
- Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton
- Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton
- Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell
- Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford
- Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton
- Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater
- Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield
- Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud
Harrison Ford confirmed he would definitely be back as patriarch Jacob, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I really didn’t realise how much work 1923 was going to be, and I absolutely feel it’s worth it. I’m excited to do another season.”
In an interview with Town & Country, Helen Mirren, who plays Jacob’s wife, revealed how pleased she was to be returning to the role of Cara in the second season, saying it was “very happy news as far as I was concerned”.
“Doing this sort of work is a journey into the unknown,” she continued. “I’m fascinated to see where Cara is going to go. Taylor [Sheridan] did say she is very much of her era, she’s looking after the house. That is what her job is. But then he said, ‘Wait, things are going to happen’. So we’ll see.”
In exciting new casting news, Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter has joined season two in the recurring role of Mamie Fossett, Deadline reported.
Carpenter will play a “highly capable US Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time”, so certainly someone to watch when new episodes drop. We’ll keep you updated on any further casting announcements as we get them.
What will happen in 1923 season 2?
As for the plot, we don’t have too many details right now. But here’s what we assume will be in store, based on what that was revealed in that tense finale.
The season wrapped with Donald Whitfield paying the Yellowstone ranch’s property tax. With the possession of the farm resting in his hands, the Duttons are facing a pretty uncertain future – that is, unless they can scrape together enough to pay him back. What they will have to resort to in order to achieve that is the more pressing question.
Elizabeth is also sure to be in the depths of emotional turmoil following her miscarriage, which should make her story arc next season both tender and intense.
For newlyweds Alexandra and Spencer, the honeymoon is over and the fallout from Arthur’s death is likely to follow them into season two.
But Spencer has more to deal with beyond the royal family – or so Cara’s letter reveals. In the show’s final scene of the season, Cara can be seen reading the letter she wrote to Spencer.
It reads: “Spencer, I fear everything your parents fought so hard to build is being ripped from us. You are its only hope; you are our only hope. You must hurry, Spencer. Or there will be nothing left to fight for.”
She then crumples up the letter before tossing it in the snow and walking home.
Meanwhile the cast has a pretty long wish list for season two, as many of them have revealed.
“I would love for Alex to make it to the ranch and meet the family,” Julia Schlaepfer said at The Hollywood Reporter‘s THR Presents panel in May 2023. “I hope we get to see some of her own strength come out now that she’s on her own. I want to meet the Dutton women. I think that that would be a lot of fun – and Teonna, we all want to meet Teonna.”
“I just want Teonna to experience what it feels like to be a child and what it feels like to be surrounded by love,” Aminah Nieves said. “I just want [to] see her running in the woods and playing… I also want Teonna to meet the Duttons. I think that’ll be incredible. I want a scene with all my best friends here.”
“I’d love to see Elizabeth find a purpose that might not be her family,” said Michelle Randolph. “Her whole driving force the entire first season is her love story and wanting to be a mother. And I think there’s so much more strength to Elizabeth than what we’ve been able to see so far. So in the second season, I’d like to see her get outside, get on a horse, have some grit to her.”
“I hope I get to pop Timothy Dalton in the face, maybe shoot from horse,” Darren Mann said. “Avenge Yellowstone, and me and my girl live happily ever after.”
“Like Brandon and Darren, I have some unfinished business at this point,” said Brian Geraghty. “Let’s just kill a lot of people.”
“I’m sick of writing letters,” Mirren declared. “Don’t expect any more letters from me.”
Meanwhile, Sklenar has teased some changes for his character Spencer Dutton in season two, hinting that he’ll be a “different man” when we next see him (what do you expect, after where we left him?)
“He’s at such a loss at that point, it’s as if he’s lost everything, and he feels like it’s his fault,” he told TVLine.
Referencing more hardships and being split from his wife Alexandra in season one’s finale, he added: “At the end there, when they’re separated, he is pretty much in a place where he’s not sure that he’ll ever see her again at all, or if he’s ever going to see his family.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sklenar also said he expects a tonal shift in season two due to Spencer’s split from Alex.
“All I know about part two is that I’m certain there’s going to be a shift in the tone, just for Spencer and the show itself,” he said. “The stakes all around have been raised to a new level, and the pain and the guilt that he’s carrying into this next part is going to shape him into a version of himself that we haven’t seen yet.”
How many episodes will 1923 season 2 have?
Sheridan previously said the upcoming batch of episodes will serve as “the second half” of season one, wrapping up the story.
“This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got,” he told Deadline.
“Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
