It’s official. Catherine Tyldesley is trading the high seas for the cobbles as she departs The Good Ship Murder after returning to Coronation Street.
The actress, who plays First Officer Kate Woods is set to depart Channel 5’s cosy crime drama in the upcoming fourth series, leaving Shayne Ward’s karaoke singing sleuth Jack Grayling to uncover onboard mysteries alone.
Set onboard the luxury Mediterranean cruise ship the MSC Virtuosa, The Good Ship Murder follows the adventures of former police officer turned cabaret singer Jack Grayling, who teams up with the ambitious officer Kate Woods to catch a killer who’s preying on passengers.
The drama is known for its light-hearted approach to cosy crime, exotic locations and the will-they-won’t they sexual tension between the two leads. This begs the question – with Catherine’s Kate Woods finally share a smooch below deck with Shane Ward’s Grayling before disembarking forever?

Before she was playing the Sherlock of the Seas, Catherine Tyldesley was most notable for her role on Coronation Street as barmaid Eva Price, the feisty high maintenance ‘princess’ of the Rover’s Return.
After exiting the show in 2017, Eva the Diva returned to the Cobbles last year with her partner Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker) and her mother-in-law from hell Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn). The arrival of the new clan was part of an ongoing sexual abuse storyline, which saw Eva’s stepson Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale) groomed into an illicit relationship with predatory teacher Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon).

With her character set to stick around on the Cobbles, Catherine will solve murders on the Good Ship Murder for the last time during the season debut as part of a ‘special appearance.’ The actress is set to fly out to Malta this spring and film the emotional final scenes.
Catherine isn’t the only familiar face from soapland to board the Good Ship Murder. Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie Plummer in Coronation Street, previously portrayed ship’s cruise director Beverly Carnell, while former Hollyoaks actor Ross Adams, known for his role as Scott Drinkwell, played Colin Smallwood, Beverly’s replacement.
Season four is already being billed by bosses as a ‘brand new voyage packed with intrigue and danger’, as well as guest stars.
Channel 5 commissioning editor Greg Barnett spoke out about the upcoming season. ‘Audiences have truly embraced the show’s unique combination of mystery, music and escapism, and we are excited to continue Jack’s journey with even more surprises and new faces in store.’
Andy Morgan, the show’s executive producer, teased what fans can expect from Catherine’s departure.
‘It’s a bittersweet moment as we bid a fond farewell to a beloved character and friend, but we’re very excited about the next voyage for The Good Ship Murder.’
