There is never a quiet meal in Albert Square, and tonight’s EastEnders proved exactly that as Penny Branning found herself at the centre of a jaw-dropping pregnancy mystery.

What started as an awkward Branning family lunch quickly spiralled into shock, suspicion and one very emotional revelation.

The drama kicked off when Jack stumbled across a pregnancy test tucked inside a shopping bag. Without missing a beat, he assumed it belonged to Denise. Denise swiftly shut that down, making it crystal clear that it was not even a possibility.

Eyes then turned to Chelea… and considering she was lying on the sofa, feeling sick and turning down wine, it seemed they had found their expectant mum. However, they were thrown when Chelsea admitted she only had a hangover.

Next on their list was Lily, fueled by the fact that Ricky told his dad he had something important to talk to him about. However, it turned out that the thing they wanted to ask was if they could borrow some money for a pushchair for Charli. Not a pregnancy announcement after all.

As everyone discussed who the pregnancy test could belong to around the dinner table, Jack jumped to the conclusion that it must be Amy’s. Fuming, Jack rushed off to call his daughter… totally ignoring the fact that he had another grown-up daughter sitting next to him that he had completely overlooked.

Penny eventually admitted the test was hers, and after some peer pressure, she went to take it. However, when she got back, she told everyone it was negative. And the relief on Jack’s face was clear for everyone to see.

Denise clocked Penny’s pregnancy in EastEnders

Later, it seemed Denise didn’t believe Penny’s claims that the test was negative, and she went rooting around in the bin. She pulled out the test and her suspicions were confirmed – it was positive.

Jack couldn’t believe it and confronted Penny… but instead of congratulating his daughter, he clumsily upset her. She told him that he never guessed it would be her test, as he didn’t see her ever having a baby and thought she couldn’t be a good mum.

As Jack struggled to defend himself, Penny knew she had hit the nail on the head and left the room.

But things are only set to get worse tomorrow when Jack tries to apologise for his reaction.

EastEnders: more drama to come tomorrow

Tomorrow sees Jack say sorry to Penny for how he reacted. But he soon ends up offending her once again.

Struggling to get her head around the fact that she is having a baby, Penny talks to Lauren. She admits that it’s hard to get used to the life-changing news – and she knows she needs to tell Vinny.

However, Oscar does the job for her when he lets slip about Penny’s pregnancy scare to Vinny in The Vic.

Vinny rushes round to see Penny, and spoilers reveal that he will go to a doctor’s appointment with her. But as they discuss their options, what will the pair decide?
