Emmerdale‘s Cain Dingle has made a huge promise to Sarah Sugden amid his guilt over Nate’s death.

In tonight’s episode, Sarah was recovering after an emergency hysterectomy as a result of her cervical cancer. The teen has seen her plan of becoming a mum through IVF crushed and has been trying to grapple with her future.

Unable to stay at home and rest as advised, Sarah headed to the body shop and had a nice chat with Kammy Hadiq. Despite Cain’s concerns, Sarah insisted on doing the books but promised not to do any physical work.

However, when Gabby Thomas asked for someone to take a look at her car, a bored Sarah jumped at the chance to help.

Sarah agreed to go for a drive with Gabby to suss out what the issue with the vehicle was.

Stressed about the engagement party and having been on a crash diet to fit in her dress, Gabby was feeling weak.

She passed out at the wheel, forcing Sarah to try and control the car from the passenger seat.

The strain on her muscles resulted in a haemorrhage, with Sarah begging Gabby to wake up. Sarah had to drag herself and Gabby to the hospital, where she fainted as soon as Jacob Gallagher rushed to her aid.

News of the crash quickly made its way through the village, with Cain then rushing to Sarah’s hospital bedside.

“Have you any idea how loved you are?” Cain told Sarah, who had been expecting a lecture.

“I’ve already lost Nate, and if anything happened to you…” he said, breaking up.

“The clock’s still ticking,” Sarah said, referring to her Fanconi anaemia, while still insisting that she wanted a family of her own.

“I know you don’t get it,” Sarah told Cain, but he tried: “Talk to me. Make me get it.”

She had a heart-to-heart with her Grumpy, opening up about wanting to have kids of her own more than anything in the world.

“I’ll never know that love, will I?” she said through tears.

When Charity finally arrived, she was concerned to see that Sarah was still fixated on “all that baby talk”.

Cain said there were “other ways” to become a mum, suggesting surrogacy using Sarah’s eggs could be an option.

An angered Charity chastised Cain for making empty promises to Sarah. “I get why she wants this,” Cain told Charity. “While she’s still alive, I want her to have it all.”

When Charity asked why he was so set on helping their granddaughter now, Cain snapped, revealing the depths of his grief.

“Because I failed Nate! And I don’t want to fail her,” he told Charity. “I don’t care how we do this, but we are gonna make this happen, so get used to it.”
