Emmerdale star Laura Norton has praised the show for revisiting her character Kerry Wyatt’s fire storyline.
Kerry is haunted by bad memories next week as she learns that Eric Pollard is planning to commit arson.
Upcoming episodes see Eric plan to set fire to the local shop in an insurance scam.
Eric hopes to claim a big payout and use the money to compensate Brenda Walker, after he recently lost her life savings in a risky cryptocurrency investment.
When Kerry finds out what Eric is plotting, she’s horrified as she reflects on her own fire drama.
In 2019, Kerry and her daughter Amy sabotaged CCTV equipment at the sweet factory and accidentally started a fire.
The blaze ended in tragedy when Frank Clayton rushed in to rescue his daughter Tracy and sadly lost his life.
Speaking about the decision to revisit the storyline, Laura commented: “The fans don’t forget! They’re very loyal. They watch the show and they pay attention to the stories. I think it’s nice because the fans do remember this.
“We revisit it and allow Kerry to perhaps explain it. It’s nice for the fans because it gives them a sense of closure, perhaps.”
Laura confirmed that Kerry will confess to Eric in the hope of changing his mind over the arson plan.
She explained: “Kerry has this past, which she’s never been able to talk about. She uses that common ground to try and make Eric see sense, because she knows the mistake that she made previously has led her nowhere good. She doesn’t want Eric to do the same thing.
“Kerry is shocked and sad over what Eric is planning, because she realises that he must be feeling really desperate. But she feels protective too, because she’s been through something similar. She doesn’t want to find Eric in the same position, so she wants him to see sense.
“Kerry has never spoken to anybody about this. It’s only Kerry, Amy, Vanessa and Tracy who know the truth and they made the decision to keep it contained between them.
“It’s hard holding onto a secret like that. It doesn’t do you any good. It was a horrible accident following some terrible decisions and it’s completely haunted Kerry. She’s riddled with guilt and regret.”
Asked about the possible risks of confiding in Eric with such a dark secret, Laura added: “I think that’s why all four of them have never told anybody! But in some circumstances, you have to make certain decisions and allowances.
“Is it going to be worth it to stop Eric from making a big mistake? But obviously that could cause huge problems, if he were to tell anybody else. There could be massive implications, so it’s tricky.”
