The BBC recently announced that the character will return to Albert Square to attend her uncle Martin’s funeral, after he tragically passed away following the explosion at The Vic.
The role of Vicki was originally played by Johnson from 2003 to 2004, though the broadcaster confirmed that the character has been recast and will now be played by Alice Haig.
In a statement shared with Metro, a spokesperson for Johnson confirmed that she was approached to reprise the role but decided to turn it down.
“Scarlett was approached, and was flattered to be asked to return, but the timing wasn’t right for her to step back into the role,” said the spokesperson. “She wishes Alice Haig and the show all the very best.”
Vicki will arrive in Walford with her boyfriend Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and their son Joel (Max Murray), over 20 years after she was last seen on-screen in 2004.
Although Vicki’s arrival raises eyebrows and her new family comes as a shock to Sharon and Alfie, she’s determined to ingratiate the family in the Square.
“I am so excited,” Haig said when the casting news was announced. “I have always watched the show, and I was born in February 1985, so I’m the same age as EastEnders!
“It’s so cool to be playing a character like Vicki – we think we know her, but a lot has changed. I can’t wait for all the Albert Square drama ahead.”
