Coronation Street star Ryan Mulvey has spoken about his character Brody Michaelis’s devastating new setback for the first time.
Just when it seems like life for the Michaelis kids is settling down, there’s sad news to come when it’s confirmed that Brody’s younger siblings Joanie and Shanice will need to be separated.

While the exact details are being kept under wraps for now, follow-up scenes next week see Brody learn that Joanie and Shanice will be kept apart for the time being. Joanie will be going to stay with an aunt, but Brody is upset as he’d wanted his siblings to live together.
The big change coincides with Brody being tempted back into dodgy dealings, as Carl Webster is offering him the chance to team up and steal cars together…
Speaking to us at an exclusive photoshoot for the Inside Soap Awards 2025, Ryan explained: “When it’s confirmed that Shanice and Joanie will be separated, Brody is absolutely heartbroken. They are his rocks. He’s got a big heart deep down, for all of his tough armour. The girls probably take up about 95% of that heart!
“So when he finds out they’re being torn apart, it’s like his heart being torn apart. He really struggles with that, and it definitely fuels a lot of the shenanigans that he gets up to next, because he loves them so much.”
He continued: “The story with Carl has been brilliant to film. Brody is working at the garage and a lot more mischief comes his way – we can say that!
“Brody works with Carl and they’re humorous and it’s funny, but then also it’s genuine and it’s raw because Brody is trying to fend for his family and get a job and just trying to be an adult, but he’s a 16-year-old. So it’s hard and it’s definitely not going to be smooth sailing with that.”
Ryan took part in the Inside Soap Awards photoshoot to celebrate his nominations in the Best Newcomer and Best Young Performer categories.
Reflecting on the nods, Ryan added: “I’m really grateful. It’s just really nice to be appreciated, because you put all of your work into your scenes and to be recognised for that is an absolute pleasure. I’m just really thankful.”
Asked why Corrie deserves support in the Best Soap category this year, he laughed: “It’s Coronation Street, innit? We’ve got the laughs, we’ve got the jokes, we’ve got the tears, we’ve got the banter but we’ve got The Rovers as well. It’s enough said!”
