As she intervened to break up a fight between three girls, shock footage showed her being hit and having her hair pulled, before managing to put one of the girls in a headlock.
The mother of the victim later praised O’Brien for her bravery in taking a stand, instead of looking on from a distance. She said: “Tina has been pretty brave in stepping in. Tina is only little herself and she was defending my daughter, so I am extremely grateful to her.”
Despite her courage however, Tina was clearly shaken up by the incident and took some time out of playing Sarah Barlow to recover, before returning at the end of the March.
She reprised her long-time role as Sarah Barlow towards the end of March, after spending some time away recovering from the fight.
Later a police report concluded that the actress was in a no way at fault and had acted in self defence.
A source said: “Police have concluded Tina acted in self-defence and hasn’t done anything wrong. Her version has always been she was defending her home and her family, and that appears to have been accepted.
“Tina is also tiny and not an aggressive person — so is not the kind to be fighting in the street usually. These girls came to her road and to her house, and that’s the only reason she got involved. She thinks they were looking for trouble and — although it was not a good look — in a way she did the right thing.”
