Coronation Street fans will recall how Peter, played by Chris Gascoyne, fled Weatherfield for good on Boxing Day in order to enjoy life on the high seas.
Peter had been deeply unhappy having faced possible prosecution for his role in the death of Stephen Reid and had battled with his own inner-guilt.
It has caused his marriage to Carla to come under deep strain and she realised that he was growing apart from her amid his dream of escaping his current life.
In order to ‘set him free’, Carla and Peter mutually agreed to call time on their romance and that he would head off to join his pals working aboard a ship in order for him to become his old self again.
Peter’s adventures on the ship are set to be revisited next week when Simon Barlow reconnects with his dad.
