Martin Grey enjoyed some entertaining storylines on General Hospital, but he departed Port Charles in February and hasn’t appeared since.
Now that the show has announced his return, Michael E. Knight, the actor who plays him, shared why he had been absent for longer than he
anticipated.
Writing Wasn’t On The Wall
Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, Knight excitedly talked about the job that was initially supposed to be short. Martin was only supposed to appear briefly, but he attributed it turning into four years to executive producer Frank Valentini.
But because the show’s head writing staff had changed earlier this year, Knight’s planned short departure ended up being longer than he originally thought it would be.
Considering what was supposed to be a short stint went on so much longer, he didn’t resent being let go, quipping, “I wasn’t going to complain about four days turning into four years!
I’m one grateful monkey, you know what I mean?” However, “when Frank called me and told me about bringing me back and gave me the lowdown [about the show’s plans for Martin], I was a very happy guy,” Knight admitted.
Fans Love Him
But the fans love Martin, and Valentini listened — hence his current return. He showed his appreciation by remarking, “If it wasn’t for the fans, none of us would have a job.”
Likening himself to spices such as paprika, Knight felt that his character was used sporadically to liven things up. Whenever he’s on-screen with scene partners like Lucy (Lynn Herring), spice definitely follows. (Check out what Knight had to say about Martin’s pairing with Lucy.)
Now that he’s coming back, it might be fortuitous for Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), who will need a lawyer to defend her against murder charges. Knight was thankful for being able to come back, and whet
