Coronation Street star Sue Devaney has received praise from Doctor Who legend Russell T Davies following the pair’s first meeting last weekend.
Russell and Devaney were announced as the joint recipients of the Your Manchester Icon award at Manchester Pride 2025, which recognises outstanding contributions to Greater Manchester and its LGBT community.
After receiving the award, the BBC sci-fi series’ showrunner hailed Devaney, who is best known for playing Debbie Webster in the ITV soap, in a sweet Instagram post.

Sharing a selfie together, he wrote: “Sue Devaney! I’ve worshipped her from afar for 40 years. Seriously. She’s wonderful.”
Russell recalled his admiration for the soaps actor over the years, since he first arrived in Manchester. “We kind of moved in the same circles but never met,” he revealed. That changed last Sunday, when they were finally brought together by the Pride event.

“And it’s entirely appropriate after all these years that I took a photo in which we look INSANE. We look like we could eat a car. But she is, as I suspected, absolutely wonderful. Oh we hooted. Love you Sue!” he continued.
Devaney responded to Russell’s post on the comments section shortly afterwards. “It was an absolute honour to share that stage with you Russell and to finally give you the biggest hug! I love you and everything you stand for! Date soon please! You, me and the fridge!”, she wrote.
A few Corrie stars joined the praise for Devaney, including Jane Danson, known for playing Leanne Battersby in the show. “She is without a doubt sunshine in human form. Loved by everyone. I adore working with her and love our chat. Lovely you finally met,” she wrote.
Billy Mayhew star Daniel Brocklebank also commented on Russell’s post, saying: “I adore that woman! Beautiful that you’ve both finally met.”
Lauren Bolton actress Cait Fitton continued the praise, writing: “What a beauty she is inside and out. You can always rely on sue for a smile.”
Sally Carman-Duttine, who plays Abi Webster, called her co-star “Sunshine Sue”, while former Corrie star Colson Smith described her as “hilarious.”
