Coronation Street star John Thomson has shared his hopes for his character Jesse Chadwick and Gail Rodwell to ride off into the sunset together.
The Corrie couple are engaged, but secrets threaten to halt their wedding, with the big day tying in with Gail’s exit storyline as soap legend Helen Worth bows out after 50 years.
Appearing on Lorraine today (December 19), Thomson told Ranvir Singh Jesse is “essentially a good bloke” and would love for him to save the day at Christmas.
“Well, obviously I can’t give too much away,” he teased. “As it’s a soap, it would be ridiculous for a wedding to go smoothly. That just doesn’t happen. There has to be jeopardy, and there is.”
“I would like to think this is lucky number 7 for Gail, really,” he continued, hinting at her previous walks down the aisle.
“She has had quite a catalogue of disasters in the past,” he then said, adding: “I would like to think Jesse actually saves the day for Gail’s exit.”
Opening up on his reaction when he got the call to go back to Corrie, Thompson said he knew Gail’s final scenes would be unmissable for fans and stars alike.
“‘I can’t turn this down, it’s iconic’,” he recalled thinking.
“I’m making a bit of Coronation Street history here,” he continued.
On the subject of Gail and Jesse’s nuptials, show boss Kate Brooks told the Christmas episode will mainly be centred on the wedding.
“Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot say anything! But this is a story with the Platts at the heart of it,” Brooks said.
“It’s really festive. Basically, it’s a story about family and how secrets impact and implode on a family. There are a lot of betrayals. Lots of secrets are exposed during this episode and it will be like classic Corrie, with a bit of a twist.”
