now revealed that it was his decision to leave. However, he didn’t rule out a return in the future.
“I don’t think any chapter is closed with a show like that,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph. “If they
were to offer me the opportunity to go back I’d take that job with a heartbeat.
“It was my decision to leave the show, the time was right to go off and do other things,” Alex added. “But later down the line in 10 to 20 years, if they were to offer me to go back I think I would take it.
“It was an incredible part of making the career I have and it is important to me. I adore that show with every fiber of my being.”
Alex also praised his former Corrie co-stars, admitting they “are all like family” to him.
“I watched a few episodes here and there and spoke to the cast,” he continued. “It’s strange to not be there as I spent so much time there but it is really nice to step back and watch it as an external person. I have no idea what is happening with the storyline anymore.”
Simon departed Weatherfield after accepting a job offer to work with father Peter on a yacht, with his final scenes airing in June.
Speaking after his departure in a farewell video, Alex called his time on the soap a “fantastic experience”.
“I’ve loved being here and I’ve loved being a part of the nation’s favourite street,” he added. “And I just wanted to say a big old thank you to everybody who’s supported me over the years and to all the people I’ve worked with.
“It’s been an honour and I will always cherish my time here on Coronation Street. Take care everyone.”
