Coronation Street has revealed what’s in store for Evelyn Plummer’s next return to the cobbles.
Evelyn makes another reappearance in Weatherfield later this month amid the ongoing scandal surrounding her daughter Cassie.
Dame Maureen Lipman recently bowed out as a Coronation Street regular after six years playing Evelyn, but she’ll continue to feature for guest spots in certain storylines.
In upcoming scenes, Evelyn checks up on her family following the huge backlash Cassie caused by spiking Ken Barlow’s drinks and stealing from him.
While Cassie expects a furious reaction from her disapproving mum, the reality is far more surprising.
Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie, told Digital Spy and other press: “Cassie expects a right rollicking from Evelyn. She expects Evelyn to turn on her, which is her normal reaction.
“But Evelyn has a real change of heart and supports Cassie. She stands up for her. Cassie can’t believe her mum is seeing her and sticking up for her.
“Even though Evelyn doesn’t believe a word she’s saying, there’s something in Evelyn that goes: ‘This is my daughter’.
“They were great scenes with Maureen and me. I always love doing two-handers with Maureen. She’s always on fire, Maureen, and it’s great working with her.”
Cassie has also received surprising support from Ken himself, as the Weatherfield legend has opted not to press charges against her despite her crimes.
Claire added: “Cassie is very moved and very touched by that. There’s a moment where she says: ‘Good old Ken. I can’t believe he’s done that for me’.
“Ken is understanding and he’s gone through everything with his son Peter, hasn’t he? He has supported Peter and seen it – he’s dealt with an addict.
“Ken sees past everything she’s doing and he remembers the good times and the things they did with each other. He’s a good man, Ken.”
