Coronation Street has released a dramatic new trailer teasing the upcoming twists and turns in the Rob Donovan story.

The villain has recently reappeared on the soap as sister Carla Connor has convinced him to give her his kidney, but was upset to hear that the transplant operation would be taking place on-site at the prison rather than at the hospital.

In today’s episode — already available on streaming service ITVX and airing later tonight — viewers learn that Rob is having an affair with prison guard Mandy, and is planning an escape.

In this new promo for next week’s episodes, we see Rob donning a prison officer uniform and arming himself with a gun, while dragging Carla out of the hospital with him.

“Be careful, people tend to get hurt when my brother’s around,” Carla’s voiceover says at the start.

“There’s no way that I am going back inside,” Rob is seen saying over the phone, before cutting to him threatening Carla and saying: “I would die before I go back to prison, and if that means taking someone with me, so be it.”

There’s also a host of new images, showing the beaten-up prison officer Rob steals the uniform from, and Mandy and Rob with Carla in the hospital.

An official synopsis accompanying the trailer teases that Carla’s girlfriend DS Swain, who we see crying the trailer, is “hot on their heels”.

“But has she underestimated just how far Rob will go? Is he prepared to kill again or will he pay the ultimate price for his audacious plan?” the synopsis adds.

Meanwhile, today’s episode has also revealed exactly who started the fire at the Platt house.
