Mystery surrounds the departure with ITV bosses planning to ditch all of his scenes and re-shoot Gail’s exit storyline after actress Helen Worth opted to quit after 50 years.
Now, a former soap star of the 70s has admitted she is “waiting on the call” to take over from Sean to be a part of the plot.
Kathy Jones played one of Gail’s closest friends Tricia Hopkins on the programme in the 1970s.
Tricia lived with Gail at the flat above the corner shop during her stint on the cobbled between 1973 and 1976.

Now with a huge gap to fill to facilitate Gail’s exit, Kathy has confirmed that she would make a return to the programme to play Tricia once again.
Speaking out on X – formerly Twitter – the actress said of Sean’s exit: “Oh heck what’s gone on?”
She then quickly followed it up to add: “I’m here……just waiting for the call!”
It appeared that many Coronation Street fans were also on board with the idea as many fans celebrated the thought that Tricia could make a comeback in the comments underneath Kathy’s post.

Before a third penned: “First thing i thought of.”
To which Kathy excitedly replied: “I’m ready.”
Tricia and Gail were rarely seen apart as the girls took pleasure in ogling up the various different men of Weatherfield.
Kathy’s telling comments come after the ITV soap decided to ditch their return plot for Martin Platt after they booted actor Sean Wilson off the show.
Bosses at the soap are declining to offer any explanation, merely insisting that Sean — who now makes award-winning cheese for a living — has “stepped down for personal reasons”.
They did not comment any further nor expand on who will replace him.
None of his scenes with Gail, played by Helen Worth, 73, will be screened, plunging the show into crisis as the actress’ departure after 50 years will now have to be hastily rewritten.
It is also a major blow to Helen, who was understood to have been thrilled with the decision to bring back her character’s former husband Martin.
Last night a source said: “It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone – and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie.
“Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set.

“He had filmed scenes with loads of the cast, but then suddenly he was summoned to head office, and later it filtered out he wouldn’t be returning or his scenes airing, but no explanation offered.
“Clearly it’s a major blow for bosses who must now find a new magical and happy ending for Helen – but they are confident they’ll pull it out of the bag, and give viewers something wonderful.”
