Coronation Street legend Anne Reid has shared she couldn’t wait to leave the ITV soap.
The Sanditon star, also known for playing Ken Barlow’s first wife Valerie on Corrie, opened up on her feelings being on the iconic soap.
Reid played Valerie between 1961 and 1971 but was apparently not having a lot of fun on the show. Her character was killed off when she was electrocuted by hairdryer, leaving a devastated Ken to reconsider his decision to go to Jamaica.
“I said, ‘I have to go – I’m going mad’,” Reid told The Guardian about her decision to leave the soap behind.
“Oh yeah! I was so frustrated,” she continued when asked if she’d got bored. “I didn’t get a laugh in nine years.”

Reid is among the cast members for Sally Wainwright’s new show, Riot Women.
The punk series is a reunion for the star and the showrunner, who created Last Tango in Halifax, starring Reid and Derek Jacobi in the lead roles.
