It looked as though Emmerdale’s resident doctor Liam was heading towards his happy-ever-after with fiancée Chas – but Ella’s return has thrown a spanner in the works. While she is blamed for Chas’ collapse, next week Ella gives Liam second thoughts about what really happened.

“With all the history that Liam and Ella have, he feels quite forgiving of her,” says actor Jonny McPherson, as he chats to us at Inside Soap. “He is aware of how much trauma she’s been through and partly sees it in a doctor-patient context.”

But despite this latest test, Jonny makes it clear that in his current romance, Liam might just have found the one. “I think he loves Chas more than he’s loved anyone before,” he admits, as he ponders what could be next for the couple…

Hi Jonny! With Ella accused of drugging Chas, how is Liam feeling about it all?

“He can’t bear the idea that, after everything he and Ella have been through, she might still be trying to destroy his life. I think he feels quite split between loyalty to Chas and wanting to be supportive of her, and also wanting to be compassionate and kind to Ella as somebody with psychiatric issues.”

How does he react when Ella suggests that Chas is addicted to painkillers?

“He initially regards it as complete nonsense, but I think Ella’s conviction in what she’s saying really makes him think that maybe there’s another explanation. It’s a very confusing time for Liam because he wants things to work with Chas, but at the same time, Ella’s insistence that she had nothing to do with it really throws him.”

Liam decides to look in Chas’s cupboard to check up on her pill consumption…

“He feels dreadful about it. He’s literally caught with his hand in the till by Chas, and she’s furious at his distrust in her. But as he quite rightly points out, he’s got history here because Leyla had a drug addiction that completely passed him by, so it’s understandable that he’s looking for an answer to the problem.”

How is he feeling about being stuck between Chas and Ella again?

“I think he’s just utterly exhausted with it all, because he thought everything had finally been resolved with Ella as best it could and they were going to move on with their respective lives. He was desperately hoping they could close the door on that particular chapter and move forward, but sadly it’s dragging on.”
