EastEnders will provide an update on Jean Slater’s ongoing scam ordeal.
Jean was recently made aware of a pension fund that she didn’t know about, which held a sum of
over £12,000. She trusted a company with her savings, and began to make plans to purchase a
retirement home in Greece.
Yesterday’s (November 29) episode saw Kathy Cotton suggest to Jean that she might have been a victim of a scam.
Jean then tried to contact her so-called financial advisors, but the company’s phone number and website had disappeared, as well as her entire savings.
Despite receiving support from her daughter Stacey, an embarrassed Jean decided to keep her ordeal a secret from Harvey Monroe and the rest of the Square.
In scenes set to air next week, Stacey convinces Jean to tell the police about her scamming, but she is left feeling helpless when the reality of the situation begins to sink in.
At number 31, Jean is relieved when a solicitor tells her that they can get all her money back.
However, Stacey becomes worried and asks Jack to look into the legitimacy of the company.
Jean’s devastating story, which is part of the BBC’s Scam Safe initiative, will continue in the coming weeks as Jean deals with the challenging fallout of the crime.
“Jean’s story will highlight the extreme strategies scammers use to gain a victim’s trust to convince them into parting with serious sums of money,” said the soap’s executive producer Chris Clenshaw.
“Not only will Jean have to cope with losing her pension money, but she’ll also have to deal with a range of difficult emotions as she tells her family and friends what’s happened.”
EastEnders has worked with independent scams expert and BBC Scam Safe spokesperson Nick Stapleton on Jean’s storyline, as well as The Pensions Regulator and Stop Scams UK.
Earlier this week, Stapleton shared his joy at the soap’s decision to explore a scam storyline.
“I am incredibly happy to see the issue of scams and fraud getting the attention it deserves with a storyline on one of the nation’s favourite soaps,” he explained in a statement.
“Scams are one of the greatest challenges of modern times; not just the money we lose to scammers as a country, but the emotional and psychological impact for those who go through one.
