EastEnders star Charlie Suff has discussed what lies ahead for Johnny Carter’s relationship with Callum Highway (Tony Clay).
The pair hooked up after sharing a surprise kiss during the Pride event in June, which effectively ended Johnny’s relationship with Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison).
Callum was wracked with guilt, given his marriage to Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), who is currently serving a six-year prison sentence for fraud in the US.
While that didn’t stop Callum going back for more, their secret affair was soon uncovered by Ben’s furious father Phil (Steve McFadden), who violently attacked Johnny.
Despite that, the two have clearly been in one another’s thoughts.
While lapping up the sun, Johnny took a racy snap of himself donning a pair of speedos and holding some inflatables and sent it over to Callum.
He quickly hid the photo from Jay Brown’s (Jamie Borthwick) view, but it didn’t take long for it to be discovered.
Jay warned him against Phil’s wrath – as nothing good could come of their flirtation.
They’re about to face an even more uncertain future as Callum’s homophobic father Jonno (Richard Graham) arrives in Walford – and almost immediately targets Eve Panesar-Unwin (Heather Peace).
Callum arrests him, with Johnny soon offering legal advice as a way of seeing whether Jonno is interested in reuniting with his son.
‘It’s heartbreaking to see, but Johnny also sees it as a huge opportunity to use all of his lawyer skills that he’s picked up over the years to support Callum and try to fix this part of Callum’s life and his relationship with his dad,’ Charlie told us.
‘Johnny is going to try as hard as he can to use his lawyer skills to help Jonno, because he loves Callum.’
He may love Callum, but Callum’s feelings towards him as still very murky. On more than one occasion he’s made it clear that he’s still devoted to estranged husband Ben who is serving time in a US prison.
‘They both know how they feel about each other, and they know they’ve meant so much to each other over the years, and now they’re crossing over that line,’ Charlie added.
‘It’s very nerve-wrecking for Johnny, I think he feels very vulnerable. He’s also very excited.He’s got to slow his horses down a little bit, and they’ve got to go at their own pace.
‘I think he is quietly absolutely over the moon, but is ready to protect himself and protect his vulnerability at the same time.
‘They very much want to go through it together, but the idea of all the Mitchells ganging up on Johnny is pretty terrifying.’
Yeah, we wouldn’t want to face off with Phil either.
Ultimately, it won’t be long before Johnny and Ben come face to face, as later next week, Jonno suffers a health setback and dies.
Ben is allowed to come across to the UK for the funeral, and as pictures obtained by Metro show, he soon locks lips with his husband as a jealous Johnny watches on.
‘There’s a lot of stuff to come, especially with Ben having a day release,’ Charlie teased.
‘There’s a lot to wade through, but they’re going through it together, and I think they both feel a lot stronger and more complete by each other’s side.
