Season 19 of Sister Wives is nothing short of a whirlwind, and it’s time to dive into the latest emotional unraveling of Kody Brown and the lives of his former wives. On the May 1st episode, viewers got a rare glimpse into Kody’s attempt at reconciliation—starting with his estranged daughter Aspen. After multiple separations from his wives—Christine, Janelle, and Meri—Kody is finally beginning to confront the broken relationships he’s left in his wake.

In a surprising turn, Kody traveled to Utah to reconnect with the children he shares with Christine and Janelle. He detailed this emotionally loaded visit to his remaining wife, Robyn, over a Valentine’s Day dinner. Though the trip was “good,” one of the most impactful moments came from a heartfelt, difficult conversation with his and Christine’s oldest daughter, Aspen. Kody recalled Aspen bluntly confronting him: “What did I do? Why don’t you like me?” Kody insisted to her that he’s always loved her, but admitted that the rift between him and her mother has affected their dynamic. He emotionally expressed that he’s felt unwelcome and alienated, not just by the kids but also by their mothers.

Kody attributes much of the family’s estrangement to what he believes is his exes’ influence. He feels like they’ve pushed him out of the picture—emotionally and relationally—with their children. In his own words, “I got alienated from my children when the divorces happened.” He suggests that the way the breakups were handled made things worse. As he tried to mend fences with Aspen, he emphasized his desire to form bonds with his kids independent of their mothers’ perceptions.

Christine, however, sees things differently. She insists she never badmouthed Kody to their kids and has always encouraged them to be open when he reaches out. She told Aspen and the others to accept their father where he’s at. Yet, Christine admitted that Kody hasn’t put in the effort to truly repair the damage. In her view, it’s Kody who is missing out on having incredible children in his life.

Meanwhile, Meri Brown, Kody’s first wife, reflected on the pain of their spiritual divorce. Despite her hopes of a fresh start during their move to Flagstaff, she eventually realized that Kody had checked out of their relationship long ago. She felt led on for years—believing things could get better—only to find that he had emotionally pushed her aside. When Meri finally called it quits in early 2023, her support system cheered her on. They told her, “It’s about damn time.” She believed Kody was just waiting for her to leave so he wouldn’t have to be the one who walked away.

Even with Meri, Christine, and Janelle out of the picture, Kody’s life isn’t any more stable. His monogamous relationship with Robyn is strained. Robyn confesses that they’re “probably doing the worst we’ve ever done in our marriage,” despite it being the first time they’ve practiced monogamy exclusively. Robyn admitted to feeling like she’s constantly walking on eggshells, always trying to ensure that Kody doesn’t sabotage their relationship out of fear of more rejection. For her, it’s been exhausting watching Kody spiral while she tries to keep their bond intact.

As Kody battles this emotional and familial collapse, he also faces financial and logistical challenges. The once-dreamed-of family compound in Flagstaff has become a symbol of their broken dreams. Despite spending nearly a million dollars on the land, they were never able to build their multi-home utopia. Now, Kody admits he’d rather scrap the whole idea and start over somewhere else—much to Robyn’s dismay.

For Janelle, the final straw in their relationship was Kody’s lack of involvement with their children. She shares six kids with him—Logan, Madison, Hunter, Garrison (who tragically passed away), Gabriel, and Savannah. Janelle explained that Kody’s disinterest and failure to mend his relationships with their children was the breaking point. “That was what was really holding me here,” she said. When Kody floated the idea of reconciliation, Janelle shut it down. She made it clear that she would always choose her children over a relationship with him.

One particularly heart-wrenching revelation came regarding Janelle’s daughter Madison. During the season premiere, Janelle shared that Maddie hasn’t spoken to her father and has cut ties with both him and Robyn. Maddie, who has three children of her own—Axel, Evangeline, and Josephine—has decided that she doesn’t want her children to be part of Kody’s life unless he can fully commit. She’s gone into full “mama bear” mode, protecting her family from inconsistency and disappointment.

Kody admitted on the show that he feels like an outsider in his own family. While he still has a connection with the five children he shares with Robyn—Dayton, Aurora, Brianna, Solomon, and Ariella—his relationships with his older children from previous marriages are distant at best. His growing sense of isolation has led to a crisis of confidence. “I can’t look myself in the mirror and say, ‘Hey dude, I love you,’” he admitted.

As for Robyn, watching the other wives embrace new lives has left her feeling abandoned and emotionally raw. “They’re all moving on,” she confessed. “I feel like the idiot that got left behind.”

Season 19 of Sister Wives pulls no punches. With Kody struggling to mend broken bonds, Meri embracing her independence, Christine standing firm for her kids, and Janelle rejecting the past, it’s a deeply emotional chapter for the Brown family. Will Kody be able to rebuild bridges with his children and save his marriage to Robyn—or has the damage already been done?
