Coronation Street has confirmed the next stage of Kevin Webster’s cancer storyline.
In Thursday’s episode, Kevin struggled to cope after a visit to the hospital brought some unexpected news.
Kevin was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this month after seeking advice over a lump that he’d found.
He underwent an operation to remove one of his testicles and has since been recovering at home, hoping that he wouldn’t require any further treatment.
Thursday’s episode saw Kevin head back to the hospital with support from his wife Abi. He received the results of tests that had been carried out shortly after his operation, which confirmed that he’d now need chemotherapy treatment.
The consultant explained: “I’m sorry to say that the cancer is present in your lymph nodes. That is, we found it elsewhere.”
Once back home, Kevin confided in Abi about how he felt “terrified” over the news.
While Kevin’s loved ones tried to stay positive, he couldn’t help fearing the worst as he struggled with dark thoughts over his health and the future of his relationship with Abi.
Kevin has struggled to see Abi developing a friendship with Ronnie Bailey in recent days, which has fuelled his ongoing insecurities.
Speaking late last year about Kevin’s story, Coronation Street‘s producer Kate Brooks explained: “[It] causes a massive strain on his relationship. Abi is a really strong character, but she’s going through her own turmoil at the same time.
“We want to tell this really truthfully. We’ve been working closely with Macmillan to make sure that we tell the story right. Ultimately, it’s about Kevin and Abi’s relationship and testing that relationship.”
She added: “Abi is going through her own situation as she struggles with the aftermath of [Mason’s death]. She loves Kevin and he loves her, but temptation comes Abi’s way.”
Coronation Street fans can see Kevin’s news tonight at 9pm on ITV1, or right now on ITVX.
