Kody Brown’s nephew talks Sister Wives, Cults & Update on Family

Title: Kody Brown’s Nephew Talks Sister Wives, Cults & Update on Family | Sister Wives Spoilers

In a surprising twist to the Sister Wives narrative, Benjamin Brown—Kody Brown’s outspoken nephew—is making headlines for his candid commentary on the family’s polygamist roots, his unconventional upbringing, and his break from the Mormon fundamentalist lifestyle. Benjamin, who has taken an entirely different path from the Brown family’s televised journey, has been using stand-up comedy and public platforms to reveal his perspective on growing up in what he describes as a “cult-like” environment.

Benjamin recently appeared on The Sarah Fraser Show podcast, where he opened up in a refreshingly honest and personal conversation. He revealed that his background in polygamy deeply shaped how he sees the world. While Benjamin doesn’t center his comedy entirely around polygamy, he acknowledges that his upbringing in a rigid, isolated environment has given him a unique lens through which he views life—and that naturally filters into his work. He described growing up in a tightly controlled space with strict narratives about outsiders and a strong emphasis on fear of the world. That worldview, he explains, kept him naive to many aspects of modern life until he was well into adulthood. He didn’t even discover stand-up comedy or bands like Nirvana until his twenties.

Though Benjamin was raised in a world that discouraged curiosity and discouraged outside influence, he’s now immersed in a completely different reality. One of self-discovery, healing, and appreciation for the diversity and kindness he’s encountered in the broader world. He explained that contrary to the fearful doctrine he grew up with, he’s found most people to be generous, open, and accepting—quite the opposite of what he was led to believe as a child.

His ties to the Brown family offer even deeper insight into the legacy of Sister Wives. Benjamin is a seventh-generation Mormon, raised in a family that was part of the LDS church for decades. His father, along with Kody Brown—yes, that Kody Brown—eventually made the shift to a fundamentalist sect in the 1980s. This transformation occurred as a small faction of the Brown family turned toward the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB), a group focused on reviving early Mormon polygamist practices. Christine Brown and Meri Brown, two of Kody’s original wives, were also raised within this sect. Janelle, meanwhile, came from the mainstream LDS faith. This split within the family set the stage for Kody’s eventual entry into plural marriage and ultimately reality television.

Benjamin’s deep dive into family history during the interview painted a broader picture of why the Brown family turned to polygamy in the first place. He explained that following social and governmental pressure in the 1970s over racist doctrine, the LDS church shifted its policies—particularly with regard to Black members. Up until 1978, the LDS church barred Black people from holding authority or accessing saving ordinances, a fact that Benjamin condemns as blatant racism. He further noted that while the LDS church officially changed its stance to retain tax-exempt status and institutional credibility, sects like the AUB continued to hold onto these prejudiced beliefs. In fact, Benjamin emphasized that the AUB continues to teach that interracial relationships, particularly with Black individuals, are unforgivable sins—something he sees as utterly abhorrent. Sister Wives - Kody Brown's Nephew Exposes Family's Toxic Past

Benjamin didn’t hold back in calling Mormonism, in all its forms, a cult. He based this assertion on psychologist Steven Hassan’s model of cult behavior, which identifies manipulative systems of behavior, information, thought, and emotional control. By those standards, Benjamin argues, Mormonism—mainstream or fundamentalist—qualifies as a cult. He says these institutions discourage critical thinking, tightly control the flow of information, and often rely on fear and guilt to keep followers in line.

His personal journey away from the church took place over several years, beginning when he left the compound to attend college in 2007. For three years, he still believed in the AUB doctrine but began encountering a wider world full of different people and ideas. It was the sect’s ongoing racist doctrine that finally pushed him away for good. He knew he could no longer align himself with a group that still regarded Black people as inferior and promoted racial purity as a spiritual principle.

Now, Benjamin is focused on healing from the psychological scars of his upbringing. He uses comedy not only as an outlet for storytelling but also as a way to process his past and connect with others. His jokes may stem from dark places, but his message is clear: people can break free from toxic ideologies and find joy, meaning, and community in the broader world.

His journey offers a sharp contrast to what fans have seen for 14 seasons on Sister Wives. While the Brown family has portrayed polygamy as a lifestyle centered around faith, unity, and love, Benjamin’s testimony introduces a much more sobering reality. It shines a light on the psychological toll, systemic control, and racial discrimination often swept under the rug in such communities.

As Benjamin continues to use his voice to challenge the structures he was raised in, fans of Sister Wives may find themselves reevaluating everything they thought they knew about the Brown family’s story. His willingness to confront these difficult truths may just be the most powerful legacy anyone from the family could offer.

Stay tuned—because if Benjamin Brown’s voice gets louder, the world of Sister Wives could be in for a seismic shift.
