Drake Hogestyn made his first appearance on Days of Our Lives in 1986, initially as “The Pawn” before becoming the iconic John Black. Over the decades, his portrayal of John became central to many of the show’s most memorable storylines. His on-screen romance with Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall, captivated audiences, and their love story earned them a Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Couple in 2005, solidifying their place in soap opera history.

Drake’s talents extended far beyond the screen. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attended the University of South Florida on a baseball scholarship, excelling both as an athlete and a student. With a double major in pre-dentistry and microbiology, Drake had aspirations of becoming an oral surgeon. However, life had different plans for him. After a career-ending injury in baseball, Drake transitioned to acting after being selected as one of the top 30 finalists out of 75,000 applicants in a talent search by Columbia Pictures in the late 1970s. His talent and charisma led him to Days of Our Lives, where he would remain a fan favorite for decades.

Before securing his role on Days, Drake appeared in smaller television roles. But it was his portrayal of John Black that truly cemented his legacy. Even though he and Deidre Hall took occasional breaks from the show, they always returned to Salem, much to the delight of their fans. Drake’s dedication to the craft and his fans was evident throughout his career.

Outside of acting, Drake was a family man. He married his childhood sweetheart, Victoria, and together they raised four children: Ben, Rocco, Alexandra, and Whitney. Tributes from his co-stars and colleagues poured in after his passing, remembering the joy and wisdom he brought to the set. Martha Madison, who played his on-screen daughter Belle Black, wrote a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Today, the world lost a great man. Salem lost its greatest hero, and I lost one of my favorite scene partners.”

Executive producer Ken Corday expressed his deep sorrow, saying, “Drake was the epitome of a team player. His contributions to Days of Our Lives, both professionally and personally, are unmatched. He will be missed more than words can say.”

Eric Martsolf, who portrayed Drake’s on-screen son Brady Black, shared a touching memory on Instagram. “This photo was taken early in my career. I was anxious, trying to fit in. Drake placed his hand on my shoulder and said, ‘You got this, kid.’ For the next 16 years, he continued to be that guiding force for me.”

Drake Hogestyn’s passing marks the end of an era for Days of Our Lives. His presence on screen, his kindness behind the scenes, and the profound impact he had on his colleagues and fans will never be forgotten. The soap opera world has lost one of its brightest stars, and the legacy of John Black will live on in the hearts of viewers forever.
