Whether you’ve been hooked on Yellowstone since it arrived on Netflix at the weekend or you’re still a Yellowstone virgin, we’ve got some good news. A new series of the spin-off show, 1923, is on its way – and believe it or not, it might even be better than the main series. Helen Mirren stars in it after all, and don’t even get us started on Harrison Ford.

Following an earlier generation of Duttons – the family at the centre of Yellowstone – 1923 serves as both a prequel to the Yellowstone main series and a sequel to the previous Yellowstone spin-off 1883 (yes, there’s another one). Helen Mirren plays Cara Dutton alongside Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, the parents of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the patriarch of the modern-day Yellowstone Dutton ranch.

Almost two years have passed since the release of the first series and now – at last – Helen and Harrison are teaming up once again, so we can finally find out the future of the Dutton family and their land. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming series, including the plot, cast and release date…

What is 1923 about?

If you’re not familiar with Yellowstone, let’s start at the beginning. The main series (now on Netflix) follows the Dutton family who own and operate the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, the Yellowstone ranch. Patriarch John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) will do whatever it takes to protect his land and works tirelessly to protect it from various threats, including land developers, politicians, as well as other ranchers.

The prequel, 1923, follows a generation of the Dutton family in – you guessed it – 1923. This Dutton family is headed up by Cara and Jacob Dutton (played by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford) and we see them face a series of hardships of their own, including Prohibition, drought and the Great Depression.

In fact, the first series saw the Dutton family seriously struggle to survive. Spencer Dutton – who was raised by Cara and Jacob – was separated from his wife at sea and killed a passenger. Cara also killed someone who attacked the family, while the bank refused to help finance the Duttons through winter. And that’s not even the half of it.

What will happen in series 2?

According to the official synopsis, the Duttons have a “cruel winter” ahead of them and it will bring “new challenges and unfinished business.” They will also be navigating he aftermath of some of the series 1 finale’s tragic deaths (no spoilers here, if you haven’t seen it!).

“With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana,” explains the synopsis. “Meanwhile, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.”

If the trailer is anything to go by, it’s set to be a somewhat explosive series.
