When Vanessa got drunk in the Woolpack and outed her sister Tracy as a thief, we thought Emmerdale‘s Michelle Hardwick was making a late charge for a Best Comedy Performance Award!
Those scenes were the gift that kept on giving for us viewers, but what does Michelle make of Vanessa’s outrageous antics of late?
We caught up with the gorgeous star to chat life, love and laughs – on screen and off…
Hi, Michelle! Vanessa’s been making us laugh recently, perhaps for all the wrong reasons! What’s your take on it?
She’s terrible, isn’t she? She’s been on a downward spiral, though in Vanessa’s defence, morally she did the right thing where Tracy was concerned – it’s just unfortunate that she outed her in front of a pub full of people!

Was it fun to film those scenes where Vanessa let rip?

To be honest, I put in a few little bits that weren’t scripted. I watched it with Kate [Brooks, Michelle’s wife who is the exec producer overseeing Corrie] and she was laughing her head off! Drunk acting is the hardest to play, it’s a fine line between getting it right and looking ridiculous. I loved the scenes where Vanessa was in the toilets with Rhona holding her hair back, like the uni days. We had a right laugh.
How would you sum up Vanessa and Charity’s relationship these days?
Oh, it’s fine. Charity’s happy with Mackenzie and Vanessa’s newly single, so they get on just as residents in the village. There’s no angst between them or anything, no resentment from Vanessa on any part. They do just get on, which is great.

What did you make of the Suzy and Mary twist and how Vanessa dealt with it?
Fantastic, although I found out what was going to happen and thought, ‘Oh my goodness’. Vanessa was grieving and the person who helped her through was Mary, so it was a proper big slap in the face for her.
For me, as Michelle, I was absolutely mortified throwing a drink in Louise Jameson’s [who plays Mary] face. As soon as we cut from the scene, I ran over to her and said, ‘I’m so sorry, did that hurt?’
But in Vanessa’s defence, I do think she reacted as anyone would – regardless of the age difference, when you’re hurt, you’re hurt. Spoiler alert, they do make up soon! It’s a clean slate now, Vanessa’s free, so who’s next?
