Coronation Street has issued an update on much loved character Emily Bishop.
Legendary actress Eileen Derbyshire, who is 94, appeared in the ITV soap as Emily between 1961 and 2016, when it was reported that she was departing to take an âextended breakâ.
Unfortunately for fans, the character never made a permanent return to Weatherfield following her travels in Peru, and later settled in Scotland.
It was from her new home where we last saw Emily â albeit via a video call â when she sent birthday wishes to Ken Barlow (William Roache) in 2019.
Emilyâs close friend Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox) revealed some new information about her in yesterdayâs (February 18) episode of the ITV soap

Coronation Street Soap Scoop! Bernie arrested in Mal mystery
Coronation Street has given fans an update on classic character Emily Bishop after she left the soap in 2016 for what became an extended break. Played by Eileen Derbyshire, the character was originally supposed to go on a short hiatus in 2016, though she never returned to the cobbles.
In last nightâs episode, Emilyâs close friend Rita Tanner, portrayed by soap icon Barbara Knox, shared an update about the absent character.
At the Kabin, Rita was complaining that Emily had been sending her âspiritual picturesâ every single day.
âSheâs sent me another one,â Rita said as a curious Brian Packham enquired as to what she was talking about.
âEmily, Iâve told you,â Rita replied. âShe keeps sending me spiritual pictures every day on a text.â

In the scene, a disgruntled Rita showed Brian the latest snap sheâd received from Emily, a picture of Jesus knocking on a door and saying, âBeholdâ.
When Rita said she was unsure how to reply to yet another spiritual snap, Brian suggested she could send Emily a âdisappointing affirmationâ, citing a picture of a beautiful beach with a witty, lightly deprecating sentence as an example.
âI canât send that to her! Sheâs my friend,â Rita protested, but considered sending one to Jenny Connor as sheâs always had âa good sense of humourâ.

Emily might have left Weatherfield in 2016, but she has been mentioned on the soap every now and then.
Back in 2019, Derbyshire returned as Emily in a video call from her new home to wish happy birthday to Corrie stalwart Ken Barlow.
As recently as 2025 Emily was referenced once again on the soap when Sally Metcalfe compared herself to her while visiting Carla Connor in hospital.
