Actor Duncan Preston reveals he has left ITV’s soap Emmerdale after five years: ‘I need to leave this place soon, it’s gotten too frightening.’
After more than a decade on Emmerdale, beloved actor Duncan Preston has decided to hang up his acting boots and retire from the soap.

Known for his portrayal of Doug Potts, the father of Laurel Thomas, Duncan made a lasting impact on the show, playing a character who was involved in numerous dramatic storylines.
Though he officially stepped back from the series in 2020, Preston recently shared that he now considers himself retired, though he remains open to select projects in the future.
Duncan Preston’s decision to retire comes after years of memorable performances and personal milestones.

As Doug Potts, he became a well-loved figure, bringing depth to his character, who was frequently entangled in complex and emotional plots.

Life After Emmerdale and Personal Changes
Duncan’s life after Emmerdale has seen him embrace new beginnings and a more tranquil lifestyle. In 2015, after a split from his partner Susie Penhaligon, Duncan made the decision to move back up to Yorkshire, a place he had grown fond of during his time on the soap. He sold his Highgate flat for a substantial profit and purchased a new home—one that offered more space and scenic views. The property is a 1950s detached house in a charming village, with views overlooking Ilkley Moor. “It’s a lovely village and looks out over Ilkley Moor,” Duncan said of his new surroundings. The four-bedroom house is a perfect retreat for the actor, where he now enjoys a quieter, more laid-back lifestyle.
Despite the dramatic nature of Doug Potts’ life on Emmerdale, Duncan’s personal life in recent years appears to be much more serene. His move to Yorkshire and the spacious, peaceful home reflects his desire for a slower pace after his long and successful career in television.
