EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick has defended Coronation Street, following the recent controversy surrounding the show.
The long-running ITV soap has received a lot of negative attention lately, after various cast exits and rumoured budget cuts. Many Coronation Street stars have spoken out in defence of the show, including actor Andy Whyment, who shut down claims of a âcast revoltâ on Instagram.
Now, EastEndersâ Borthwick, who plays Jay Brown, has shared his support for the rival soap.
âI feel like with the soaps, they all have peaks and troughs,â he told The Sun. âThey all have moments of up, moments of down. Youâre going to get that with longevity. But that one thing that they have is longevity.â
The actor highlighted Corrieâs over 60-year run, calling it an âamazing showâ and âan institutionâ.
âAnd I feel like to be a part of that institution â and obviously EastEnders joined a lot later and what weâve achieved in our 40 years. Theyâre amazing shows and theyâre in the fabric of the country.â He added: âI feel like they always will have a place there.â
Pointing out the tumultuous nature of soaps, Borthwick attributed the âpeaks and troughsâ to the longevity of the shows, including EastEnders.
âWeâre on a good run and have been for a while. Iâm sure weâll go back round the other way and thatâs just how it goes with longevity. Itâs one thing that they have over many other genres that have been going forever.
âListen, Corrieâs an amazing show. Itâs brilliant and the people on it are great,â he concluded.
