And just like that, Days of Our Lives showed us exactly where Tate and Sophia’s baby story is heading. And it’s guaranteed to be a mess.
We got tipped off on the plan on Wednesday’s episode, as Tate and Sophia’s hopes for a couple from her church to adopt their baby appeared and vanished in the blink of an eye. Right now, their big plan is to convince Sophia’s mom, Amy, that adopting is a good idea by finding the perfect, Godly, Christian couple to take their baby.
The teens almost seemed to have it, only for it to fall through — coincidentally just as Johnny and Chanel reflected on their own miscarriage and decided it was time to try for a baby again! What’s more, the two pairs ran into each other in the Horton Square right after both big moments.
And that made it blindingly clear where this story is heading. Johnny and Chanel will try for a baby and learn that they can’t have one. But they’ll still want a family, so they’ll decide to go with adopting.
Right now, Sophia and Tate are scrambling to get her parents onboard with adopting — but as Sophia pointed out before, they don’t have to. By the time the baby comes along, they’ll both be 18. At that point, they can put their baby up for adoption without any say from her parents. Nor do they have to tell Amy who adopted the tot. That may tank Sophia’s relationship with her parents, but she seems pretty willing to go that way if she has to.
And the quickest, easiest way to facilitate an adoption, will probably be to let Tate’s cousin, Johnny, and his wife, take the baby. And that is sure to enrage Amy.
First, there’s the DiMera name. EJ’s time as DA notwithstanding, Johnny’s father is no stranger to controversy, gross misdeeds, and the occasional villainy — enough to get him locked up from time to time! And Johnny’s grandfather was a mob boss and supervillain. Heck, Stefano was Salem’s own devil. And speaking of which…
Like it or not, Johnny, his sister, his aunt and his grandmother were all possessed by the actual devil at one point! Placing their baby with Johnny and Chanel would probably be about as far from Amy’s ideal family as it gets. And that means that even if Sophia keeps their names from her mom at first, eventually she will find out they have her grandchild.
And about the only way we can see her reacting is with pure, self-righteous rage. At that point, we can see her deciding to fight for custody of the child herself. She may not have any right to fight for the baby, but that’s never stopped anyone in Salem. And if she can make the case that Johnny and Chanel wouldn’t be fit parents and that her daughter can’t handle a baby, she may actually have a shot at winning.
But in doing so, she’d have to tear pretty much everyone else’s lives apart in the process. And pit her directly against EJ who, we’re sure, will fight tooth and nail for his son to keep his baby. (Unless EJ’s in jail and/or shot by then…)
So, yeah, we can not only see where this story is now heading, we can also see just how much trouble it’s sure to cause. But honestly, despite the DiMeras’ money and power, we can’t guarantee they’ll come out on top. Because even with as little as we’ve seen Amy, we can tell she’s a force to be reckoned with.
