Days of Our Lives: The DOOL star almost died during the protest. Horrifying experience! Spoilers⚠️😨🚑

In a recent jaw-dropping revelation that goes far beyond the scripted drama of Days of Our Lives, Galen Gering — the beloved actor behind Rafe Hernandez — opened up about a terrifying real-life ordeal that nearly cost him his life before his Hollywood journey had even begun. During a heart-stopping episode of the State of Mind podcast hosted by General Hospital star Maurice Benard, Gering recounted a near-fatal experience in a remote village in Tunisia — a chapter of his life he had long kept private.

Long before Gering became a daytime television icon, he was an eager and ambitious 18-year-old fresh out of high school. With dreams as bright as the L.A. sunshine, Gering landed a once-in-a-lifetime modeling job for an Italian company. The shoot was set against the exotic and picturesque backdrop of Tunisia — a destination that promised adventure, beauty, and the beginning of a glamorous career. “I thought I was on top of the world,” Gering said, his tone both nostalgic and somber. But that dream swiftly spiraled into a nightmare that would haunt him for years.

Unbeknownst to the young aspiring model, his arrival in Tunisia came during a time of extreme anti-American sentiment. Tensions in the region had skyrocketed following a controversial U.S. military operation that led to the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s son. Though Gering was blissfully unaware of the political storm brewing around him, it wouldn’t be long before he was violently swept up in it.

The modeling shoot was set in a small Tunisian village, dusty and remote. While preparing for a scene, a curious local man approached him and asked a seemingly simple question: “Where are you from?” Gering, ever polite and unaware of the danger, proudly replied, “Los Angeles.” When the man pushed further, Gering confirmed, “Yeah, I’m American.”

That admission was like striking a match in a room full of gasoline. The man’s face twisted in fury as he screamed, “America! We hate! We kill Americans!” The chilling words echoed through the village and caught the attention of others. Within moments, a crowd swelled around Gering, pots and pans clanging, angry voices rising into a deafening chant of “Kill! Kill!”

“I was surrounded,” Gering recalled, visibly shaken even years later. “One minute I’m posing for a shoot, and the next I’m in the middle of a mob screaming for my blood.” The peaceful, exotic landscape had become a battleground — and Gering was the target.

Frozen in place and paralyzed by fear, Gering’s thoughts began to spiral. He remembered hearing urban legends about travelers being kidnapped or vanishing in foreign countries — tales he once brushed off as fear-mongering. But now, in the midst of this chaos, those stories felt like grim prophecy. “I thought that was it. That this was how I was going to die — in some village across the world, before I even got a chance to live.”

But just when all hope seemed lost, a stranger emerged from the crowd. Short and heavy-set, the man rushed toward Gering and grabbed his arm. “Come here, come here!” he urged with urgency in his voice. Gering, acting on instinct, followed the man through the growing crowd. “I didn’t know if I could trust him,” Gering admitted. “But what choice did I have?”

The man led him into a nearby building, quickly instructing him to lie down. Before Gering could ask questions, the man began covering him with heavy, old rugs — layer after layer until he was completely hidden. The air became thick and suffocating. “It felt like I was buried alive,” Gering said. “I don’t know how long I was under there, maybe 15 minutes, but it felt like hours. The crowd was still outside, yelling. I didn’t know if I’d make it out.”

As he lay concealed beneath the rugs, Gering’s mind drifted back to his family, to his parents who had supported his modeling dreams, to the life he was supposed to be building. “Everything felt so fragile,” he reflected. “In that moment, I realized how quickly everything can be taken away.” A YouTube thumbnail with maxres quality

Eventually, the stranger returned and pulled the rugs off him. “Come, come,” he whispered again, leading Gering through a back passageway and away from the raging villagers. The rest of the crew, who had already begun packing up in a panic, offered no assistance. Worse still, they turned their backs on him entirely. “They told me they wouldn’t work with me again,” Gering said, disbelief still clear in his voice. “They blamed me. Like it was my fault I nearly got killed.”

The betrayal was nearly as painful as the fear. Abandoned by the people he thought he could trust, Gering was left to escape with nothing but the help of a stranger whose name he never even learned. Eventually, they regrouped in a safer area far from the hostile village. Though the physical danger had passed, the emotional scars would remain.

The experience fundamentally changed Gering. “It was a wake-up call,” he told Benard. “I was just a kid — naive, excited about the world. That day, I grew up fast.” The incident not only gave him a renewed sense of gratitude but also taught him the value of empathy. “You never know what someone’s been through,” he said. “That day in Tunisia taught me to look deeper, to not judge people at face value.”

For fans of Days of Our Lives, Gering’s off-screen ordeal is a powerful reminder that their favorite stars are real people — people who face real danger, make hard choices, and endure life-changing experiences. While Rafe Hernandez is a pillar of strength and justice on-screen, Galen Gering’s real-life courage and resilience are equally inspiring.

As the podcast episode concluded, host Maurice Benard thanked Gering for sharing such a raw and personal story. Listeners, many of whom tune in expecting light-hearted celebrity chatter, were instead treated to a gripping tale of survival, reflection, and the strength of the human spirit. Gering’s story was more than a brush with death — it was a sobering journey that speaks to the unpredictable nature of life and the unshakable will to survive.

Now, as Days of Our Lives fans continue to follow the unfolding drama in Salem, including Megan Hathaway’s manipulations and Bo Brady’s miraculous return, Gering’s real-life drama serves as a compelling side note. It reminds us that while soap operas are filled with danger, passion, and dramatic turns, sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones that happen off-camera.
