Speaking on The Late Late Show, Danny admitted that he would have been open to reprising his role but was never approached by the show’s producers. “I do get a lot of people asking if I’d go back, and I’ll be honest—I would have gone back if they’d asked me. But they didn’t ask me. I think they’ve got the hump with me now, and I don’t know why,” he shared. Despite this, he previously hinted to Metro that EastEnders may have missed their chance to bring Mick back. “I think because I’m not coming back for the 40th, I’ve missed the boat. It would need to be something really special for Mick to return.”
Mick Carter’s final scenes were nothing short of explosive. After reuniting with Linda Carter, he became entangled in a dangerous car chase with Janine Butcher. The intense pursuit ended with all three characters plunging into the sea. While Mick managed to save Janine, he heroically went back in to rescue Linda, unaware that she had already made it to shore. That was the last time anyone saw him, and in the months that followed, he was presumed dead. But with no body ever recovered, fans have never stopped hoping that Mick somehow survived.
Danny himself has joked about the moment he knew it was time to leave the show. “As soon as they put me with Janine, I knew I had to go. You know she’s going to murder you eventually, so I had to get out,” he laughed. While he left EastEnders to explore other projects, he hasn’t completely ruled out a return. “Who knows? Maybe I will go back. If there’s still an appetite for it, then maybe Mick could come back.”
In a more candid interview on Rob Beckett’s Smart TV, Danny revealed another shocking reason for his departure. “Mick’s got a kid with Janine—how mad is that?! That’s why I left. They f***** put me with Janine, and I thought, ‘I’ve got to f*** off.’”*
Since leaving Albert Square, Danny has been busy with a variety of projects, including the hit series Rivals and the SkyAX comedy Mr. Big Stuff. He also plays the lead in the new film Marching Powder. Reflecting on his exit, he explained, “One of the main reasons I left was for stability. In this industry, you never quite know when your next paycheck is coming. You could have a great run and then suddenly go seven months without a job. That uncertainty is tough, but at least with EastEnders, you always had a steady gig.”
Despite moving on, Danny still keeps an eye on EastEnders. Watching the recent live episode brought back memories of his time filming the Who Killed Lucy Beale? storyline. “It reminded me of when we did the live episodes before. I was watching, and I could see them all flapping, the fear of doing a live episode. But I’ve got to say, they pulled it out of the bag.”
