This article contains spoilers for tonight’s Easter Sunday (April 5) episode of Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on YouTube and ITVX.

Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney) family were delighted when she won her appeal and was released from prison, but things took a worrying turn when she suddenly disappeared in today’s episode.

Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) was beside himself as he rushed into the Rovers in search of her, and it wasn’t long before Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) had joined him.

Fortunately, Debbie was fine, and Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) found her enjoying some time alone in the precinct.

Back at her flat, Debbie and Carl shared an emotional heart-to-heart, with Carl finally appearing to harbour some guilt for how he’d treated Debbie.

Viewers will know that she served time in prison for drink driving, despite the fact that it was Carl behind the wheel. After dropping the bombshell that she was his biological mother, she insisted on taking the blame to make up for the years of dishonesty.

In tonight’s episode, he confessed that he thought she’d died in the accident, which is why he’d moved her into the driver’s seat. He swore he never would have done it if he knew she was alive, as he never meant for her to get in trouble.

This led Debbie to make the devastating admission that she had actually wanted to stay in prison, as she knew that her condition would deteriorate and when the time came, she wanted to be alone so that she wasn’t a burden to anyone.

Fans were devastated when it was confirmed that Debbie had young-onset dementia last year, and have seen her condition progress over the past few months.

Carl was understandably gutted to hear Debbie’s confession, as he insisted that she wasn’t a burden because her loved ones wanted to look after her.

However, Carl can never simply be there for someone without benefiting from it himself, so it wasn’t long before he was asking Debbie for another favour, though you’ll have to tune in to find out exactly what that is.
