Coronation Street‘s new on-screen couple Gareth Pierce and James Cartwright have previously worked together on another soap.

It was recently confirmed that Pierce’s character Todd Grimshaw will strike up a romance with Cartwright’s newcomer Theo Silverton, who will make his debut next week as he works as a scaffolder on the street.

Pierce has now revealed that Corrie isn’t the first time he and Cartwright have worked together. The pair previously co-starred on BBC Radio 4’s long-running radio soap The Acrhers.

“I did one of his dad’s plays about 13 years ago, so I met James when he came to see that,” Pierce said while speaking to 𝑭𝒂𝒏𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒆 & 𝑾𝒆𝒃𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒆: 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬.𝙞𝒏𝙛𝒐  and other media.

“But we were also in The Archers together. In fact, just pre-Covid, we were one of the last lot in studio where we were waiting for Boris Johnson’s announcement to close down production.

“And so those actors of us that were still in the studio in Birmingham, we were just being fired rewrites because they just wanted to record as much as possible of The Archers with who was there. Because we didn’t really know, it was such a fast emerging situation.”

Pierce went on to say it “definitely helped” that he and Cartwright already new each other before their on-screen romance.

“But we haven’t worked together loads, so that also means that in terms of Todd and Theo meeting and the early parts of the relationship, it’s not like you know each other really well, so you can utilise that,” he continued.
