Fans of âThe Young and the Restlessâ were hit with heartbreaking news recently: Tonya Williams made her final appearance as Dr. Olivia Winters on February 15, 2012, and it seems she wonât be returning to Genoa City anytime soon. Despite fans still approaching her with hopes of her comeback, Williams has made it clear that sheâs moved on for good.
In an interview with soaps.com, Williams expressed her love for the show, stating, âThe show is fantastic, by the way. I left on great terms. I absolutely love the show, so thereâs no negative tea to spill.â Her decision to leave the CBS daytime series wasnât because of any issues with the show itself; rather, she was seeking something different in her life.
âI try to explain it like this,â Williams shared. âHave you ever dated someone for a long time and then you donât want to date them anymore? And you have broken up with them,â she laughs, âand like 10 to 15 years have passed, and people are still saying, âWould you go back with that guy?â No, youâre a different person now.â
Since leaving âThe Young and the Restless,â Williams has made significant strides in the Canadian film scene. In 2001, while still starring on the show, she founded the Real World Screen Institute. Over the years, this production company has expanded to include a film festival and a charitable organization, focusing on amplifying diverse voices and advocating for equity in the Canadian screen industries.
Williamsâ contributions havenât gone unnoticed; she was honored with the 2024 Change Maker Award from the Canadian Academy on Thursday, May 30âan accolade well-deserved for her impactful work in the film community.
Despite efforts from âThe Young and the Restlessâ to lure her back, including for the showâs 50th anniversary in March 2023, Williams declined. âHonestly, it would have been lovely to do, but I could not imagine doing the role,â she admits. âI go through a lot of process into who that character is, and that character was someone from 20 years ago. I said to them, âI donât want to do it at a disservice. I really feel I left Olivia on a high note, and everyone has a great memory.’â
When asked if there was a possibility of her reprising the role of Olivia, Williams remained firm in her decision. âI would need to mentally prepare for this character,â she explains. âAnd I just donât feel I have the chops for it anymore, or the desire, really.â
So, it seems Dr. Olivia Winters has taken her final bow in Genoa Cityâat least with Tonya Williams at the helm. Fans will have to cherish the memories of Oliviaâs time on the show while celebrating Williamsâ continued success and advocacy in the film industry.
