In tonight’s Emmerdale, the soap revisited a past storyline as Aaron Dingle struggled to cope with Anthony Fox’s death and considered hurting himself out of guilt.
The soap recently aired dramatic scenes that saw Anthony die after being beat up by Aaron. Knowing Anthony had repeatedly sexually abused his daughter Ruby when she was a teenager, Aaron intended to make him confess and report him to the police.
However, things got out of hand when Anthony highlighted Aaron’s own history of abuse, with the mechanic unable to control his anger.
In the aftermath, Aaron has been having a hard time keeping quiet about the murder, even after his boyfriend John Sugden disposed of the body and made it look like Anthony had skipped town.
In the new episode, Aaron resorted to day drinking and offered to buy Ruby a beer to check in on her. Ruby accepted the drink, but said she didn’t need his help and was determined not to waste any more time thinking about her father.
John interrupted the two right as he sensed Aaron could spill their secret.
“I’m not letting you do this,” John later told him, insisting it would be “game over” for both of them if he came clean.
“I’ve robbed [Ruby] of any justice she might’ve hoped for,” Aaron insisted, but John tried to make him see that telling the truth would land them both in prison.
Later on, John covered up for Aaron with Ruby, telling her his partner was going through some “personal stuff”.
Ruby seemed unfazed and reassured John no apology was needed and that Aaron was lucky to have him.
Meanwhile, at home, a guilt-ridden Aaron grabbed a knife with the intention of self-harming.
Thankfully, he tossed the knife aside through tears before hurting himself, but the storyline revisits Aaron’s history of self-harm we’ve sadly seen before.
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams
